Pístina has a village layout that remains legible to this day; chapels and stone boundary walls add to its historic character. Ponds and forests surround the village, which lies within the Třeboňsko Protected Landscape Area and Biosphere Reserve. Its settlement history stretches from medieval origins to individual buildings dating from the 19th century.

Historic Village Layout

Pístina’s founding dates back to the Middle Ages, and its original settlement structure remains legible to this day. The basic plot layout, comprising 16 large farmsteads, has also largely been preserved. It is documented in the Berní rula tax register of 1654, the Theresian Cadastre of 1757, and a building cadastre map from 1827. These three historical reference points span the 17th to the early 19th century and make the continuity of the farmstead layout tangible. In Třeboňsko, Pístina is one of the villages with a village heritage or conservation zone. The village’s historic character is therefore shaped not only by individual listed buildings: the layout of the farmsteads is also an integral part of the historic village plan.

Chapels and Stone Heritage

The chapel, built in 1824 and dedicated to Saint Catherine and the Fourteen Holy Helpers, stands on the village green in the centre of the village. It is now a protected monument. A hexagonal lantern with an onion-shaped top sits on its roof. It was built just three years before the 1827 building cadastre map, which also documents the basic plot layout. There is a small chapel at house number 10 and a stone wayside shrine at house number 87. Several stretches of traditional stone boundary walls have been preserved. The stone wall between the Adamovi and Daňhů properties is particularly prominent.

Jewish Cemetery: Arrange Access in Advance

Pístina Jewish Cemetery was established from 1850 onwards on the edge of the forest, about two kilometres west of Stráž nad Nežárkou. It contains more than 100 gravestones, most of them dating from the second half of the 19th century. The cemetery is locked. The key can be borrowed from the town hall in Stráž nad Nežárkou; before your visit, check whether it will still be possible to borrow it on your chosen date.

Agriculture and Landscape

Flax was once widely grown in the area around Pístina. It was used to make linen, which was widespread at the time; the villages had communal flax-drying kilns known as Pazderny. This tradition complements the architectural heritage with a glimpse of the region’s former agriculture and processing.

Ponds and forests surround Pístina. Cyclists can find the “Nežárka” cycle route nearby: it runs from the tourist signpost at Stráž nad Nežárkou Castle via Šimanov to Jemčina. If you plan to follow this route, check the conditions before setting off.
