South of Lomnice Nad Lužnicí, in the surrounding area, lies the Velký a Malý Tisý National Nature Reserve, with open water and adjoining wetland vegetation. An educational trail, ponds with their own natural or recreational appeal, and historic buildings offer a range of themes to explore during your stay. Nature enthusiasts will find different highlights here than those focusing on church and architectural history.
Landscape, educational trail and fishing
A mosaic of open water and wetland vegetation characterises the reserve’s landscape. Another natural feature is Lomnický velký rybník: in the Třeboňsko region, it is one of the most significant sites for slender mudwort (Coleanthus subtilis). The plant occurs there regularly and in large numbers, across an area of up to one hectare. This makes the pond interesting not only for its waterscape, but also for this specific plant population.
The Velký Lomnický educational trail is 6.5 kilometres long and has 15 stops. The first stop is on Zámecká ulice, at the car park by Farská louka. If you plan to start your visit here, check the current route signage in advance. The route length and number of stops provide a clear outline of the walk; they do not specify a walking time or difficulty level.
Fishing is permitted at Peřinka pond for those who obtain a permit. The fishing season runs from April to October. Before planning a day of fishing, check the currently applicable permits and season dates.
Churches and architectural history
Kostel sv. Václava
Kostel sv. Václava was founded in 1359 by Vilém ml. z Landštejna, originally as a castle chapel dedicated to Corpus Christi and Saints Peter and Paul. The Gothic vault dates from the same period. A significant feature of the interior is an early Baroque altar with four statues of saints at its sides. It was made in about 1658 in the workshop of Jan Martin Schwarzmaier, a cabinetmaker and woodcarver from České Budějovice in Bohemia. The vault and altar thus represent markedly different periods: the building’s construction in 1359 on the one hand, and the furnishings added roughly three centuries later on the other.
Kostel sv. Jana Křtitele
An older sanctuary already stood on the site of Kostel sv. Jana Křtitele before the town was founded and the castle built. The painting of Saint John the Baptist on the main altar was created by Josef Peške of Lovosice in 1838. A massive tower stands on the south side; it was probably built around the turn of the 16th century. Its classification as a typical example of the late Gothic work of the Rosenberg building lodge is also considered likely.
Stará radnice
Stará radnice was built before 1604 and is listed as an immovable cultural monument. Its date provides another historical reference point alongside the church buildings. Visitors interested in architectural history can compare the town hall’s early date with the different periods of construction and furnishing represented by the two churches.
