Dolní Bukovsko combines an early Gothic church, the history of a former fortress and several cycling routes as different reasons to visit. There are also bus connections through Dolní Bukovsko and a brewery pub offering beer tastings. If you are looking for a hotel, you can plan your stay around the interests you would like to pursue locally: local history, cycling or a visit to the brewery.

Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary and its frescoes

The single-nave parish Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Dolní Bukovsko dates from after 1260. It stands in the middle of the square, surrounded by a former cemetery laid out like a park. Early Gothic architecture and the site's former use as a cemetery thus meet in one place. Gothic frescoes were also uncovered and restored in the church. The building offers a tangible way to explore the town's history: its architectural form and wall paintings tell different parts of that story, while the square forms part of the setting around the building.

Traces of the former fortress

The history of the fortress can also be understood through a series of dates. A document issued by Emperor Charles IV in 1349 attests to its existence. The fortress fell into disrepair in the 15th century. Its remains were found in 1924; today, an island in the middle of the municipal pond and the place name V Hradu serve as reminders of it. The document, the later decay and the reminders in the form of the island and place name belong to different periods in this history. Alongside the church, visitors interested in the former structure will find another historical subject in the town.

Cycling in the flat countryside

Dolní Bukovsko lies in the flat Pšeničných blata countryside. The “Jižní Čechy” cycling route runs through the cadastral area. Another specific route reference is cycling route 1132: it runs via Sviny to Dolní Bukovsko and is part of a cycling tour to Borkovická blata. These descriptions refer to different routes: one runs through the cadastral area, while the other leads to the town via Sviny and is part of a tour to Borkovická blata. Check the route locally before setting off. The flat countryside and the named routes offer a focus in their own right, alongside the church and local history.

Getting there by bus

Regular buses run through Dolní Bukovsko on the Veselí nad Lužnicí–Týn nad Vltavou, České Budějovice–Týn nad Vltavou and Tábor–České Budějovice routes. These bus connections include several named places. If you plan to combine your journey with onward travel or a day of cycling, check the current timetable before departure: routes and travel times may change.

Brewery and beer tasting

Next to Rodinný pivovar Bukovar is a brewery pub where you can sample beer on tap. Brewery tours are available by prior arrangement. A tasting at the pub and a brewery tour are therefore two different ways to include the brewery in your stay; a tour must be arranged in advance. If this is an important part of your itinerary, plan your inquiry accordingly rather than assuming you can visit without notice.

Plan your stay around your interests

When looking for a hotel in Dolní Bukovsko, you can first decide what you want to focus on during your stay. For culture and history, there is the parish Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary and the traces of the former fortress; for a cycling trip, distinguish between the information about the “Jižní Čechy” route and route 1132. The brewery pub adds a tasting option, while a brewery tour requires prior arrangement.
