The Ostrolovský Újezd nature reserve protects plant communities that include spring snowflakes. Together with the Renaissance chateau, marked hiking trails and nearby places to visit, the town brings together nature, history and outdoor activities. If you are looking for a holiday apartment for your stay, you can decide whether you would rather explore local history and buildings or include trails and natural attractions.
History Across Several Eras
Ostrolovský Újezd is first recorded in the 14th century under its former name, Oujezdec. The castle of the Lords of Újezd, which stood on a promontory above the Stropnice River, also dates from the 14th century. The Renaissance chateau in the town centre was built by Kryštof Kořenský z Terešova in 1569; it still stands at the centre of the town today. This chronology distinguishes the medieval castle from the later Renaissance building.
The Výklenková kaple stands about 500 metres east of the town, on the road to Borovany. A description published in 2021 dates the small masonry wayside chapel to the mid-19th century; it has been a protected monument since 3 May 1958. The medieval castle site of Újezdec is also nearby. An earth rampart fortification and massive ditches have survived there. The buildings form a sequence through time: a medieval castle, a Renaissance chateau and a 19th-century wayside chapel. As a small masonry chapel, the later building differs from the fortifications; different eras and architectural forms thus meet in the surrounding area.
Trails, Landscape and Excursions
The surrounding area offers varied scenery and beautiful viewpoints. You can also pick mushrooms and blueberries there. Marked hiking trails intersect in the town. A blue-marked trail leads from Ostrolovský Újezd about 2 kilometres north to Trocnov, the birthplace of Jan Žižka. The trail junction offers several marked hiking trails, while the blue-marked trail leads to a specific historical destination.
For a cycling trip, the easy cycling route “Na kole okolo Borůvkovan – Borovanský dětský razítkový okruh,” suitable for young children, runs from Borovany along cycle route 1123 on the road towards Ostrolovský Újezd. Route details may change, so check the route before setting out.
The Beran pond, about 3 kilometres away, is one option for swimming. Check the conditions and access on site before planning to swim there.
Practical Information
The “Spilka” inn is located in the cellar of a former brewery. If you would like to stop there, check in advance whether the inn is currently open. This will help you decide how to balance local history, marked trails, a cycling trip and other nearby destinations when planning your stay.
