Explore Srubec by cycling routes, outdoor trails and two distinct memorial sites. When planning, it helps to consider route lengths and seasons: one marked cycling stage starts in Srubec, and another route passes through the town. On foot, you can reach the České Švýcary valley and the České Švýcarsko pond from the bus stop.
Cycling routes of varying lengths
The marked cycling route through the Novohradsko–Doudlebsko region includes a 17.6-kilometre stage from Srubec to Ostrolovský Újezd. Along the way, surfaced and unsurfaced paths alternate. Spring, summer and autumn are considered the best seasons for this route.
Another option is the cycling programme “Šlápněte do pedálů na Budějovicku”: its 40-kilometre, three-hour stage passes through Srubec and is rated easy. Together, these details describe a shorter stage and a longer programme; the longer one also has a stated duration and difficulty level. Details of this programme’s route may change, so check the information before setting out.
Walk into the valley
From the Srubec bus stop, you can reach the České Švýcary valley and the České Švýcarsko pond by following a red-marked hiking trail; the walk takes less than 30 minutes. This easy stroll through the valley is suitable for families with children and for walking a dog. Strollers are not recommended. This limitation is particularly important when choosing a suitable walking route.
Seasonal outdoor activities
During the summer months, hiking is possible on marked and unmarked trails in the surrounding area. Mushroom picking in the neighbouring forests is another option. Before picking, check the local access and gathering rules. One of Srubec’s four ponds is designated for fishing; check access arrangements for the specific fishing spot before setting out. In winter, when snow conditions are suitable, the area is used for cross-country skiing. This activity depends directly on snow conditions.
Monuments in Srubec
The monument to Robert W. Whitehead commemorates the pilot who was shot down over Srubec on 11 April 1945. It stands on Dobrovodská Street in Srubec and was unveiled on 28 September 1945. The monument to the victims of the First World War is at the junction of Ledenická Street, by a pond in the town centre. It was unveiled in 1919 and created by sculptor Edwin Schopenhauer. The two memorial sites differ in their purpose and history: one commemorates a named pilot, while the other honours the victims of the First World War.
