Úsilné can be explored through specific evidence of its architectural and local history: the Neo-Gothic Chapel of St. Wenceslas, built in 1900; local examples of Folk Baroque; the well with its bronze donkey figure; and the Člověk a krajina nature trail. There is also a section of the Eliášova dědičná štola open to visitors and local traditions. You can choose what to focus on according to your interests: the buildings and well are distinctive local details, one of the nature trail’s stops explores the area’s history and land use, while visiting the Štola is possible by prior arrangement.

Chapel, Folk Baroque and Well

The Chapel of St. Wenceslas is Neo-Gothic and dates from 1900. Its architectural style and precise date provide a clear starting point for exploring Úsilné’s architecture. The U Sukdolů farmstead and house No. 9, “U Prokšů,” are local examples of Folk Baroque. The U Sukdolů farmstead is particularly notable for the large volutes on its gable. Volutes are curled, curving ornamental forms; this specific detail on the gable makes the farmstead’s classification easy to see. Together, these buildings illustrate two distinct architectural traditions: a Neo-Gothic chapel on the one hand and rural Folk Baroque on the other.

There is a bronze statue of a donkey at the well in Úsilné. Water is another local feature: the wells in Úsilné are supplied with water from the Eliášova štola. The village’s sights thus include not only architecture but also a figurative detail and a named connection to the water supply.

Nature Trail and Mine Gallery

The Člověk a krajina nature trail has 13 stops with information panels. One stop on the outskirts of Úsilné focuses on the village’s history and land use. The Czech title translates as “Man and Landscape” and neatly sums up this perspective. If you want to explore the area’s history through land use as well as its buildings, the nature trail offers a dedicated thematic route.

A 400 m section of the Eliášova dědičná štola is open to visitors; visits must be arranged in advance. If you would like to include it in your itinerary, make arrangements beforehand. Unlike the nature trail with its information panels, this is a different kind of visit: an underground structure that must be visited by prior arrangement.

Traditions and Local Cuisine

The revived Svatováclavská pouť was accompanied by a gathering of former residents and friends of the village. The connection with former residents and friends makes the pilgrimage a social occasion, not just an architectural topic. A local culinary specialty is “oslí uši”: local bakers make the pastries from an old recipe, in sweet or savoury versions. The name literally means “donkey ears.” If you would like to try the specialty, ask locally about current availability.
