Ponds and birdlife
An island in the Velké Nákří pond makes birdlife a special feature of Nákří: it is home to the only breeding site of the spoonbill in the Czech Republic. Spoonbills (Platalea leucorodia) have bred here regularly since 1991; in recent years, there have been three to four pairs. The artificial islands in the pond also provide a habitat for birds. Many greylag geese and other waterbirds currently breed there. Common and very rare waterbirds and marsh birds are also frequently found around Blatec and at other ornithological sites, including Nákří. For nature enthusiasts, this brings together a special breeding site and a broader variety of waterbirds and marsh birds.
Swimming and views
When it comes to swimming, it is worth comparing the two ponds directly. Velký Luský covers 26.00 ha and is suitable for swimming on the side locally known as “by the church.” Velké Nákří covers 42.49 ha and is less suitable for swimming. Suitability for swimming therefore does not follow the size of the pond: the smaller Velký Luský is better for swimming, while the larger Velké Nákří is less suitable and, as the pond with the spoonbill island, puts birdlife in the spotlight.
A stone viewing point on the road to Loma was built in 2011. From there, you can enjoy a view of Nákří and the surrounding area, including Šumava. The viewpoint complements the ponds with a named vantage point overlooking the village and its surroundings.
Paths and local history
The Jakub Kubata monument is in the vicinity of Nákří, outside the built-up area. It is accessible year-round and can be reached via a green-marked hiking trail from Zliv towards Zbudov; the route is suitable for pedestrians and cyclists. Alongside the viewpoint, this offers another destination with a different focus: the monument links a visit to a marked route suitable for two modes of travel.
An old country road once ran through Nákří from České Budějovice via Zaháj onward to Protivín and Písek. This former country road adds a distinct historical connection to the nature destinations. The entire complex of the Church of Saints Peter and Paul in Nákří is protected as a historic monument; the church heritage is therefore a cultural focal point alongside the pond landscape.
The traditional municipal fishing competition for the Nákeřský kapr and the ČEZ fish is held at the village pond Čekánek. If you are planning a trip specifically for this competition, check the event dates in advance. This lets you take the municipal event into account when planning your trip, alongside nature, views and local history.
