Hosín combines a layered church history with flight options at the airfield and a landscape shaped by former kaolin mining. The Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul preserves a Romanesque section on its east side; at the airfield, options range from powered and glider flying to skydiving and pilot training. There are also the Hosínské Orty, a tunnel labyrinth and an important winter roost for bats and horseshoe bats. This offers different focuses for planning your visit: architecture, aviation and nature. One important practical limitation: the underground system of the Orty is officially inaccessible. Prior arrangements may be needed for powered and glider flying.

Romanesque Traces in the Church

The Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul in Hosín was built in the Pseudo-Romanesque style and completed and consecrated in September 1900. The original Romanesque church survives as a side chapel on its east side. The older section is therefore part of the church, not merely an earlier episode in its history. The building brings together two distinct architectural layers: its Romanesque origins and its later Pseudo-Romanesque design.

The square church tower rises from the corner of the crossing and reaches a height of 36 metres. The former Romanesque sacristy contains valuable frescoes dating from around 1340. They date from considerably earlier than the completion and consecration of the church building in 1900; at the same time, their location connects the medieval frescoes with the older part of the church. The tower, architectural form and frescoes thus offer different ways to explore Hosín’s building history.

Flight Options at Hosín Airfield

The Aeroklub České Budějovice at Hosín Airfield offers powered and glider flying. Skydiving and pilot training are also available there, including flying ultralight aircraft. Flight options include short 20-minute flights, longer options lasting 40 to 60 minutes, and individual flights along a route of your choice.

The flight times make the difference between a short and a longer flight concrete; individual flights add the option of choosing your own route. Flight options may change. Prior arrangements may be needed for powered and glider flying. Before planning your visit, check which option is available for your preferred date.

Hosínské Orty: Kaolin Mining and a Winter Roost

The Hosínské Orty extend along the boundaries of the municipalities of Hosín, Borek and Hrdějovice, near České Budějovice. Their tunnel labyrinth was created by former kaolin mining. The Orty are also one of the most important winter roosts for bats and horseshoe bats in South Bohemia. Here, industrial history and the importance of the site as a winter roost meet.

The underground system is officially inaccessible for safety reasons; numerous entrances are closed. Do not plan to visit the Orty as walkable tunnels. As access conditions may change, check them before visiting.

Viewpoint and Cycling Route

Between Hosín and Hrdějovice, the U Borovice viewpoint offers a view across the entire city of České Budějovice. The focus here is therefore different from that at the Orty: a view across the city rather than the tunnel labyrinth and its origins in kaolin mining. Cycling route 1054 runs along the road beside the U Borovice viewpoint. If you plan to take the route, check the signs and local conditions.
