The chapel and former schoolhouse offer different perspectives on the history of Dobrejovice. The archaeological sites also differ markedly: the Hradec u Dobřejovic hillfort and the Dobřejovice–U Obrázku archaeological site. When planning your stay, you can choose your focus according to your interests, whether sacred history, local development or archaeological features.

Archaeological Traces and Access

The Hradec u Dobřejovic hillfort lies above the right bank of the Vltava. Three parallel stone ramparts enclose an area of about one hectare. The two outer ramparts are also separated by a ditch; the ramparts are up to one metre high. One hectare is equivalent to 10,000 square metres, which gives an idea of the size of the enclosed area. The stated height is a maximum. To picture the layout, it is important to consider the area and arrangement together: the three parallel ramparts frame the site, while the ditch further separates the two outer ones.

One access notice states that Hradec u Dobřejovic is inaccessible because of the Poněšice game reserve. Check the situation locally before planning a visit.

The Dobřejovice–U Obrázku archaeological site contains ten burial mounds that have not been more specifically identified. This is a different feature from the enclosed area at Hradec: here, a group of mounds is counted, while there, the site is defined by parallel stone ramparts. If you are comparing archaeological sites, these distinct forms provide a useful point of reference.

Chapel and Local History

The chapel in Dobrejovice is dedicated to Saint John of Nepomuk. It was built in 1870–1871 and consecrated on 29 May 1871, at Pentecost. The construction period and the consecration date are two separate historical milestones: the period marks the building’s construction, while the specific day in May marks its consecration. The dedication identifies the building’s religious association, while the date places the consecration on a particular feast day. The chapel’s history can therefore be explored both through the saint to whom it is dedicated and through a precisely specified date.

The former school building dates from 1901. Today, part of it houses an inn and part a library. The two uses occupy different parts of the building; its former function as a school and its two current functions belong to different periods. The building therefore offers more than a construction date for local history: it connects a specific historical moment with its divided present-day use.
