Two very different themes provide a guide for a stay in Měcholupy U Blovic: the forest landscape around the Chýlava Massif and the history of the Volunteer Fire Brigade, which once had a theater stage. Nature, outdoor activities and local culture offer distinct options to choose from. On hot summer days, a seasonal swimming option is also available.

Forest Landscape and Nature Reserve

Měcholupy is situated on the southern slope of the extensive Chýlava Forest Massif. The massif includes the eponymous nature reserve, which covers an area of 25.90 hectares. It preserves an old mixed deciduous forest with a rich protected ground flora. The extensive massif forms the landscape’s backdrop, while the nature reserve provides a specific focus for conservation. These are two distinct natural features to consider when choosing where to visit: the forest massif as a wider landscape and the reserve with its preserved woodland. The combination of old deciduous trees and protected ground flora draws attention not only to the treetops, but also to the plant life on the forest floor.

Cycling and a Seasonal Swimming Option

The landscape around Měcholupy is suitable for cycling. On hot summer days, the local fire-fighting water reservoir can be used for swimming. These options appeal to different interests: cycling takes in the surrounding landscape, while swimming is specifically suited to hot summer days. If you are planning to use the reservoir, check local conditions before your visit.

Fire Brigade and Theater History

The Volunteer Fire Brigade in Měcholupy was founded in 1889 and had a theater stage. In 1913, additional scenery and a new curtain were acquired, painted by Jaroslav Vaisar of Nepomuk. Alongside the expansion of the stage, the curtain adds a specific artistic detail to the story. Associations from neighboring villages and traveling theater companies also borrowed the stage. It was therefore important not only to the fire brigade, but was also used by groups from outside Měcholupy. For visitors interested in local culture, this chapter tells the story of both the stage’s equipment and its users.

Měcholupy was first mentioned with a year, 1360, in a property register of Pomuk Monastery. These dates lead to different chapters in the village’s history: 1360 marks the early mention, 1889 the founding of the fire brigade, and 1913 the acquisition of the stage elements. This makes it possible to distinguish the early written history from the specific cultural details of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The Velká Skála archaeological site is located near Měcholupy. Earlier archaeological investigations took place there, and new finds were later recovered. This adds an archaeological connection in the surrounding area to the history of the fire brigade and theater. At Velká Skála, the focus is on investigations and finds, while the fire brigade’s history recounts its founding and the use of its stage.
