A winter lime tree more than 250 years old stands beside the parish Church of St John the Baptist; the 1680 rectory is opposite the church. These three details give Čížkov U Blovic a clear cultural and historical focus: the building’s history, a dated rectory and an old tree can be considered as different aspects of the place. Added to these is the ruin site of Strašná skála, with its medieval origins and distinctive landform.
Church, rectory and winter lime tree
The parish Church of St John the Baptist is originally Gothic and was remodelled in the Baroque style from 1727 to 1735. Its Gothic origins and a clearly dated 18th-century remodelling thus stand side by side—two points of reference for anyone interested in architectural history. The rectory opposite dates from 1680, making it older than this remodelling. The church and rectory can be read as different examples of architecture, with their dates marking distinct periods in the history of the place. The winter lime tree beside the church adds a natural accent: at more than 250 years old, it offers its own point of reference in time. The church is occasionally open to visitors. Strašná skála: medieval history and landform
Strašná (also known as Strážná) skála is a registered immovable cultural monument in the Na hrádcích area towards Přešín near Čížkov. The Buzic family founded the site after the mid-13th century on a pebble-rock outcrop. A ditch up to 6 metres deep and up to 15 metres wide separates the ruin site from a plateau that slopes gently southwards. These measurements help give a concrete sense of the landform: the depth describes the cut, the width its extent, while the gentle slope adds the direction of the plateau. At Strašná skála, historical origins and landform thus offer two distinct ways of looking at the site.
A timber-framed cottage on the village square
Another cultural point of interest is on the village square below the church: a timber-framed cottage stands on property No. 4. It is among the unregistered cultural objects in Čížkov. This differs from Strašná skála, which is registered as an immovable cultural monument: here, the focus is a timber-framed building on the village square; there, it is a ruin site with medieval origins. The two examples offer different points of interest—one through its construction and precise location, the other through its historical context and landform.
Choose cultural interests to suit your preferences
You can use these differences to decide what to focus on: the church and rectory draw attention to building phases and dates, while Strašná skála combines medieval origins with a specific description of the terrain. The cottage adds a rural building style on the village square. You can therefore shape your stay around whether you would like to focus on architectural history, a historic ruin site or smaller traces of village culture.
