The Tisovské rybníky Nature Reserve lies in the area around Tisová and Jemnice and protects a system of ponds and adjacent wetland ecosystems; St. Nicholas Church also tells the story of an older church preserved within the later building. This offers two distinct focal points for your stay: birdwatching in the surrounding area and local history. Please note the access arrangements for the church: it is normally open to the public only during services.
Ponds, Wetlands and Birdwatching
Tisová lies in a flat landscape of pastures, forests and ponds. In the area around Tisová and Jemnice, the Tisovské rybníky Nature Reserve protects a system of ponds and adjacent wetland ecosystems.
Up to 150 bird species can be spotted while birdwatching in the nature reserve. Which species you may see varies by season, so this figure is an upper limit, not something to expect on every visit. If birdwatching is the main focus of your trip, the season is a useful factor to consider when planning.
The Building History of St. Nicholas Church
St. Nicholas Church was built around an older medieval church in the first half of the 18th century; the older church remained part of the building. It probably already stood in Tisová in the 13th century, was Early Gothic, and was structurally connected to a nearby fortress. The later building was therefore not a complete replacement: the earlier church was preserved within it.
At the center of the church is the entrance to the Born family crypt, which was used at the end of the 18th century. A memorial to 48 victims of the First World War stands next to the church. These historical points of interest span the building’s history, the family crypt and the commemoration of the victims.
Plan Your Visit and Get Your Bearings
The church is normally closed and open to the public only during services. For an individual visit, you can ask the municipal office about the keys and arrange a guided tour of the church. As such visit arrangements may change, it is advisable to inquire in advance. If you plan to visit the crypt, the same access information applies, as its entrance is inside the church.
Tisová lies on road II/199, a feeder road from Tachov to the Nová Hospoda junction. This road provides a specific reference point for your journey; check the route for your travel date based on your own plans.
When looking for a holiday apartment for your stay in Tisová, you can decide whether to focus on birdwatching or on architectural and local history. The time of year matters for nature observation; for an individual visit to the church, however, you need to inquire with the municipal office. The two options therefore involve different planning considerations.
