Monuments and Architectural History

The medieval Smírčí kámen (reconciliation stone) is a distinctive feature of Zihle. The round sandstone slab rests on a shaft that widens slightly towards the bottom; on its front it bears a raised paw cross within a circular border. The stone stands about 30 m west of Zihle square, on the south side of the road to the railway station and alongside a row of houses.

Kostel sv. Václava is an ambitious Baroque building based on a design by F. M. Kaňka and occupies a dominant position in the municipality. To its north stands Socha sv. Jiljí, a Baroque statue of a saint on a tall, prismatic pedestal. It is located on the right-hand side of the road to Velečín. The two landmarks have different points of focus: the church stands out for its design and position in the municipality, while the statue is notable for its style, pedestal shape, and roadside location. Together, they offer a chance to appreciate Baroque architecture in both a church building and a standalone figure.

Kostel sv. Filipa a Jakuba also has older origins; its present appearance was shaped by Baroque and late Baroque renovations. South of this church’s cemetery, a memorial to the victims of the death march stands in a thoughtfully designed park. Here, two aspects of local history come together: the construction phases of a religious building and a memorial site commemorating a specific event.

Granite and Geological Formations

The natural features of the surrounding area vary in form and origin. The Viklany are a group of granite boulders near Zihle, formed by the selective weathering of coarse-grained biotite granite. Selective weathering means uneven erosion and accounts for the boulders’ varied shapes. The Dědek granite formation is also nearby and measures about 5 m high and 8 m wide. While the Viklany are described as a group and in terms of the geological process that formed them, Dědek is best understood by considering the approximate size of a single formation.

The U Báby–U lomu protected area preserves especially notable erratic boulders and groups of boulders in the Zihle area as examples of various forms of block disintegration in Tiská granite. A yellow-marked hiking trail passes through the rock formations; check the trail markings before setting out. The area can be reached via a walkable tourist path, with its access point more than 250 m from the road. When planning your visit, allow for both the route and the walk to the access point.
