The Parish Church of Kralovice

The Church of Saints Peter and Paul in Kralovice brings together several clearly distinguishable traces of the town’s history. It is first mentioned in records from the mid-13th century; from 1575 to 1581, it was rebuilt by Florian Gryspek. The nave is made of dark red, unplastered bricks on the outside, and a Renaissance portal is located at the western entrance. The Gryspek family crypt lies beneath the side chapel. In this way, a single building brings together architectural history, design and family connections.

The distinction is important for placing events in time: the mention from the mid-13th century is written evidence, but not automatically a construction date. The rebuilding from 1575 to 1581 belongs to a separate, later phase. This makes it possible to read the church’s history without conflating the mention and the rebuilding into a single date. The Gryspek connection also links the rebuilding history with the family crypt beneath the side chapel.

Mariánská Týnice: Pilgrimage and Architecture

Mariánská Týnice was a former pilgrimage site and a former provostry of the Cistercian monastery in Plasy. The monastery acquired Mariánská Týnice in 1230 from its then owner, Roman z Týnce. The pilgrimage complex was built according to plans by Jan Blažej Santini-Aichel. The acquisition, former religious function and architectural planning refer to different aspects of its history; the year 1230 refers to the monastery’s acquisition, not to the construction of the complex.

The Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary in Mariánská Týnice has a floor plan in the shape of an isosceles so-called Greek cross. This is a feature of the architectural layout; Jan Blažej Santini-Aichel is credited with planning the entire pilgrimage complex. Mariánská Týnice has been protected as a cultural monument since 1964 and was declared a national cultural monument of the Czech Republic in 2018. The two years refer to protected status, not to construction phases.

Museum and Route Planning

The Museum and Gallery of the North Pilsen Region in Mariánská Týnice has permanent exhibitions on the historical development of the region. The museum also offers the interactive children’s route “Muzeem všemi smysly.” These provide different ways to explore the site: regional history in the permanent exhibitions and an explicitly interactive activity for children. By choosing your focus, you can distinguish between these topics instead of treating the museum, church architecture and pilgrimage history as one and the same experience.

A bus runs from Kralovice to Vysoká Libyně, the starting point of the “Cesta slovanských bohů” educational trail. If the trail fits into your plans, check the timetable before setting off. This lets you account for the bus connection as a specific part of your day’s plans.

The options differ clearly according to your interests: in Kralovice, the parish church’s construction phases and its connection with the Gryspek family take center stage. In Mariánská Týnice, pilgrimage history, architecture and regional museum topics come together. This comparison helps you choose between the history of a single church building and that of a pilgrimage site with a museum.
