Lipno is one of the gateways to the Hracholusky Reservoir recreation area. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between the different points of reference: the circular trail leads to Lipno, the excursion boat operates on the reservoir, and the fishing area is in the wider surroundings. The activities therefore relate to the village, the reservoir and the wider area.

History in Lipno and the Surrounding Area

The first recorded mention of Lipno dates back to 1316; the name Bohosud z Lipna appears in this context. The Baroque chateau also once had a chapel dedicated to St Anne, which was consecrated in 1715. The dates mark different historical points of reference: 1316 is the first recorded mention of Lipno, while 1715 marks the consecration of the chapel that once belonged to the chateau.

The important archaeological site of Staré Lipno lies 1.75 km south of Lipno. It shows phases of settlement from the Late Bronze Age and the Early Middle Ages. The site of the Staré Lipno hillfort is protected by a high, triple stone cross-wall; double to triple fortifications have also survived on its western side.

The late medieval castle ruins of Buben are also located in the surroundings of Lipno, at the confluence of the Úlický potok and the Mže. They are a different historical point of reference from Staré Lipno: settlement phases and ramparts are the focus there, while here it is the castle ruins and their location at the confluence.

Recreation Area and Practical Information

The Hracholusky Reservoir stretches for 22 km along the Mže between Stříbro and Pilsen. The excursion boat Josef Švamberk offers regular trips on the reservoir from June to the end of September. As this is a seasonal service, check the current sailing dates before your trip.

The Hracholusky Tourist Information Centre is located at Kemp Keramika, Lipno 357, Líšťany. If you plan to visit the centre, check its location before travelling. This lets you combine practical orientation on site with planning your excursions, without conflating the boat service, the circular trail and activities in the wider area.

In the wider surroundings of Lipno, fishing is permitted without interruption in the Mže 4 fishing area (No. 431 028). Different information is relevant for this activity than for the boat service: check the current fishing rules and permit requirements in advance. This will help you consider the permit for the named area together with the regulations relevant to your trip.

The activities also differ in terms of the main planning consideration: the season for the boat service is specified, the circular trail is described by its length, and fishing requires attention to rules and permits. These distinctions provide a practical basis for planning suitable excursions during your stay.

Hracholusky Circular Trail and Art Installation

The 31.6 km Hracholusky Circular Trail runs along the reservoir’s south shore to Lipno. The trail also leads from Lipno to a unique group of statues of Roman soldiers by the reservoir. The figures are part of a modern art installation commemorating the history of Roman trade routes to Bohemia. The route thus combines a specified distance, a course along the south shore and a clearly identified cultural theme.
