A long, street-like village square with a stream running through the middle defines the historic character of Losiná. Together with the Chapel of St. Anne and local festivals, it forms a focus of cultural history. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between architectural history and event dates: if you want to attend a festival, plan your stay around its date; the village’s history offers a different way to explore the area.
The Chapel and the Village Scene
The Chapel of St. Anne has been protected as a cultural monument since October 6, 2006. This small Neoclassical building has a square ground plan and a pyramidal roof topped by a bell turret. The chapel was built in the second half of the 19th century. Its architectural significance lies primarily in its geometric design and balanced proportions; the building is laid out with strict central symmetry. Its ground plan, roof shape, and symmetry together explain its character and make its design a tangible way to explore architectural history.
The historic village center consists of a long, spacious, street-like village square, with a stream running through its middle. Several traditional farmsteads have been preserved on the square. Their entrance gates—both arched gates and newer gates with pillars—are very well preserved. A statue of St. John of Nepomuk on an Ionic column also stands on the road to Nebílovy. The year 1740 is inscribed on its pedestal. The farm entrances and statue add further concrete details to the view of the village alongside the chapel.
History of Losiná
Losiná is believed to have older, early-feudal origins. A transfer took place in 1327 under Jaroslav of Štěnovice. A significant date in the village’s later history is October 11, 1620: on that day, during the Thirty Years’ War, the village was attacked by Hungarian cavalrymen serving the Bohemian Estates. The village’s history also extends beyond its center. The Antonínská silver mine in the vicinity of Losiná was in operation for about fifty years from the end of the 17th century. This is an approximate period; the operating life is given as about fifty years.
Festivals and Dates
Havelské posvícení is celebrated on the first Sunday after the feast day of St. Havel. The festival includes fairground rides, swings, and shooting galleries in front of the cultural center from Saturday to Monday. The following Monday, the traditional Pěkná hodinka takes place at the cultural center in Losiná. If you are traveling for the festival, check the dates before your trip.
Another seasonal tradition takes place nearby, not in Losiná itself: the Vojtěšská pilgrimage is held on the first Sunday in May at the Church of St. Vojtěch in Planiny, in the village of Nebílovský Borek. The two events therefore differ in both date and location. This is helpful when planning a stay around an event and avoiding confusion between Losiná and the pilgrimage site outside the village.
