Vrhaveč lies in a valley basin through which the Drnový potok flows, with gentle hills bordering the area to the west and east. Cycling routes, hiking destinations and historic sites offer different ways to spend your stay. You can take in the landscape as well as the history of individual chapels and estates.

Cycling around Vrhaveč

The gently rolling landscape around Vrhaveč is suitable for easy bike rides. The main cycling route connects Klatovy at Luby railway station with the municipalities around Vrhaveč. The section through Vrhaveč and Běšiny is more than 11 kilometres long. This gives you a specific route length and a named connection to help you find your way; the landscape around Vrhaveč also offers room for easier rides.

Near Hejno is Spálený les forest, with a network of forest tracks and purpose-built adrenaline cycling trails. This adds another type of cycling route and trails through the forest to the cycling options. If you plan to use the cycling trails, check conditions locally, as they may change.

Hiking trails and views near Hejno

Hejno lies in a saddle between Holý vrch, at 547 metres, and Červený vrch, at 509 metres. From Hejno, you can see parts of Klatovy, Pošumaví and the Bohemian Forest. A red-marked hiking trail connecting Klatovy and Velhartice passes through the village. The views and marked route offer different reasons to explore Hejno on foot.

Another hiking destination is the ruin of the Baroque Chapel of St John of Nepomuk, dating from 1730. It is in the forest, about one kilometre from Loreta. Yellow-marked hiking trails lead to the chapel from Loreta or Týnec. It is a ruin, not an accessible interior. For route planning, there are two clearly identified options: the red-marked trail through Hejno and the yellow-marked approaches to the chapel.

Forts and chapels: local history

Kouskova Lhota in Černé Krávy is a former fort with a farmyard dating from the first half of the 16th century. The surviving two-storey tower served as a granary from the 17th century onwards. The dates mark two distinct chapters in the history of the site. The fort itself is privately owned and not open to visitors; you can take a walk around Kouskova Lhota and through the forest to Farářova studánka.

Two chapels also offer specific historical points of reference. The Chapel of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Neznašovy was built in 1876. 1937 is the year of consecration recorded for the Chapel of St Anne in Vrhaveč. The dates therefore refer to different things: the year of construction in one case and the year of consecration in the other.

The local calendar also includes a Masopust procession through the municipality, organised annually by an association. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the event dates in advance.

Sports facilities and practical planning

The multi-purpose sports and leisure facility in Vrhaveč is open to the public every day. From May to September, it is open from 12 noon to 7 pm; from October to April, from 12 noon to 5 pm. You can arrange reservations with the facility manager. As access arrangements may change, check the opening times before your visit.

For planning, it helps to consider the different options separately: the cycling route provides a connection from Klatovy, the hiking trails lead to destinations on foot, and the historic sites offer their own points of interest. You can shape your stay around the activities that interest you, and check event dates or access times accordingly.
