Several historical traces converge in Předslav: the Church of St. James the Greater, whose earliest written mention dates back to 1325; Tvrz Fortress, probably of medieval origin; and a family tomb connected to the history of music. There is also a cycling route that passes through the town. This gives you a choice of focus when planning your trip: architectural and commemorative history, or Předslav as part of a cycling route. If you are planning an overnight stay in Předslav, this priority can help shape your hotel search.

Church and Local History

The Church of St. James the Greater brings together two very different historical points of reference. Its earliest written mention dates back to 1325; in 1827, František Palacký was married in the church. The first date marks the building’s earliest written mention, while the second refers to a specific event at this location. The church is also designated as a protected monument. It therefore represents a cultural and historical highlight where a building, its history, and a biographical episode come together.

Fortress and Building Phases

Tvrz Fortress is thought to date back to the 14th century, when it was built as a water castle. It is first mentioned in 1483. During the Renaissance, the complex was converted into a small chateau; a Baroque extension was added in the mid-18th century. This sequence makes Tvrz particularly interesting if you do not want to limit your exploration of architectural history to a single period: its probable origins, first mention, and later alterations describe different stages.

Another connection to the fortress’s earlier history can be found at the Sokolovna. The building stands on the remains of a former local fortress and was ceremonially opened on January 29, 1923. Today, it is used for various sports and cultural events. The Sokolovna offers a way to explore both the site’s historical use and its later architectural history, while its present-day use adds another perspective.

The Chapel of St. Apolena offers a different architectural accent. It is a simply designed Baroque chapel dating from 1726. Unlike Tvrz Fortress, whose history spans several building phases, this is a clearly identified structure with a specific date. The chapel thus adds a distinct, simply designed Baroque building to the historical overview.

Memorial Site and Cycling Route

The Měchura family tomb is located by the cemetery’s northern boundary wall in Předslav. Around the turn of the 20th century, it was moved here from a disused cemetery chapel. The tomb is the final resting place of the composer Leopold Eugen Měchura. Its connection to the history of music distinguishes this site from the buildings: the focus here is on a specific grave, its relocation, and the memory of a composer.

For a cycling trip, the approximately 42-kilometer “Z Klatov za romantikou do Žinkov” route runs from Měčín through Předslav to Točník. Předslav is therefore part of the route described. Its approximate length gives you an idea of the scale of the trip; when planning your ride, it is advisable to check the current route before setting off. This way, you can plan Předslav as a place to explore its architectural and commemorative history, or as a stop on a cycling trip.
