A peat bog, a footpath between Horská Kvilda and Kvilda, and the history of the Zlatá stezka offer different perspectives on Horská Kvilda. When planning your trip, you can focus on the landscape, outdoor activities or local history. You can explore these themes individually or side by side.

Peat Bog and Viewpoint

Jezerní slať is a peat bog covering more than 200 hectares between Horská Kvilda and Kvilda. An observation tower at the entrance to Jezerní slať offers views of almost the entire bog. Its location between the two places situates the area geographically; the tower provides a specific viewpoint. For your planning, these are two different scales: the expanse of a large natural area and a vantage point from which almost all of it can be seen. This lets you distinguish whether your nature-focused visit is more about the peat bog as an area or the view from the tower.

On Foot Between Horská Kvilda and Kvilda

The Horská Kvilda–Kvilda footpath runs mostly alongside the cross-country ski trail, but diverges from it in a few places. Wet sections are crossed on boardwalks. This makes it possible to distinguish the walking route from the ski trail: the two follow a similar line for most of the way, but do not coincide everywhere. When planning your trip, this difference matters: the footpath has its own diversions from the cross-country ski trail. The footpath opened in 2011 at the initiative of the two municipalities; this date places its creation in the context of a joint municipal project.

Cross-Country Skiing, Subject to Conditions

The cross-country ski trails around Horská Kvilda are machine-groomed from 15 December to 31 March when there is sufficient snow cover. For a winter stay, both the stated period and sufficient snow are therefore relevant. Check the snow conditions in advance if cross-country skiing is the deciding factor for when you travel. The trail system in the area is marked with wooden signs bearing a skier symbol or with the standard KČT markings. These are the two forms of wayfinding described for your planning.

Historic Routes and Building Styles

The Zlatá stezka passed through Horská Kvilda. It was a medieval trade and salt route from Passau to Kašperské Hory. Some sections are still visible, mostly as holloways. Sunken into the terrain, holloways give the route a distinctive landscape form; alongside its historic trading function, its visible traces are also part of its appeal. Another glimpse into the past is the original architecture: before the Second World War, the Šumava log cabin was the predominant type of original building in Horská Kvilda. The route and the building style offer different historical perspectives: the trade route on the one hand and early local architecture on the other.

Roadside Starting Point

The starting point for the visitor trail to Jezerní slať is a small car park on the Horská Kvilda–Kvilda road, with an unpaved surface. Check local conditions before your visit and take the unpaved surface into account when planning your arrival.
