Nezdice na Šumavě lies in a valley between the forested mountains of Javorník, Ždánov and Sedlo. The chapel, museum of handicraft production and timber-framed house opposite the municipal office, designated a cultural monument, give the village a cultural focus; there is also a ski area and the Strašín Cave in the neighboring municipality. For travel planning, the time of year is especially important: the museum has an annual summer opening period, while details of winter operations at the ski area should be checked in advance.
Chapel and Architectural Heritage
The chapel in the village square dates from 1898. It was originally dedicated to the Virgin Mary and later to Saint Anthony. Its bell dates from 1728. The year it was built, the sequence of its dedications and the date of its bell give the chapel several specific historical points of reference. Another building with historical significance is a timber-framed house opposite the municipal office. It is designated a cultural monument and complements the chapel with a different architectural theme: local architectural heritage includes a residential building as well as a religious building.
Handicrafts and a Museum Visit
The Muzeum řemeslné výroby Nezdice na Šumavě is a history museum dedicated to traditional crafts and life in the Bohemian Forest. The museum has a reconstructed, working bread oven. For those interested in cultural history, the village’s buildings are complemented by a focus on handicrafts and regional everyday life.
The museum is open every year during the summer holidays, from July 1 to August 31: Tuesday to Sunday, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 12:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.; it is closed on Mondays. When planning, take both the day of the week and the lunch break into account. Confirm the schedule before traveling.
Landscape, Trails and Excursions
The Hipostezka trail runs through the cadastral area of Nezdice na Šumavě. Strašín Cave, by contrast, is in the neighboring municipality. The cave can be visited by prior arrangement with the municipal office in Strašín or the information center in Nezdice. If you plan to visit, make the arrangements in advance.
The Ski areál Nezdice ski area is about 500 meters from the village center and has three runs graded easy to intermediate. Check winter operations before your trip. Alongside the museum’s summer opening period, winter activities are therefore another possible reason to visit, although the conditions for these two kinds of visit are not the same.
When to Visit and Where to Stay
If you are interested in the museum, plan your visit around the period from July 1 to August 31 and the relevant days of the week. If you plan to include the ski area, check its winter operations in advance. These two points address different planning questions: the museum’s dates and opening hours are provided, while operations at the ski area need to be confirmed for your travel dates.
