Sklené brings together buildings from several centuries and two named cycling routes. The village lies at an elevation of 510 metres, about 7 kilometres southeast of Svitavy. Its landmarks include the Church of St Peter and Paul, the church cemetery ensemble, the Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows and preserved, enclosed farmsteads. During your stay, you can choose to focus more on cultural and historical details or on cycling. The architectural history ranges from the Baroque to the church’s Art Nouveau appearance; each cycling route has its own connection to Sklené.

The Church and Cemetery Ensemble

The Church of St Peter and Paul acquired its present Art Nouveau appearance during an extension and renovation carried out between 1912 and 1914. The church cemetery ensemble includes a Baroque gate. A Baroque mortuary chapel dating from 1739 also stands at one corner of the cemetery. The buildings can be distinguished by period: the church’s present appearance dates from the renovation in the early 20th century, while the gate and mortuary chapel are Baroque. Thus, Sklené’s religious architectural history spans more than one era.

The Chapel South of the Church

The Baroque Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows stands beneath a linden tree beside a field track, about 1 kilometre south of the church. Today, only its perimeter walls remain. It was probably built sometime in the first half of the 18th century. The chapel is therefore a separate point of reference south of the church; its approximate distance, the field track and the linden tree are all part of its location description. Its current condition differs markedly from the church’s Art Nouveau appearance: only the chapel’s walls remain.

Village Character and History

Enclosed farmsteads in the Empire style have been preserved in the village. They complement the religious buildings with an agricultural aspect of the settlement’s character. Sklené was first mentioned in written records in 1317. At that time, it was named as part of the episcopal fiefs in the Svitavy province. This is a historical reference to the village’s administration, not the construction date of any of the buildings mentioned. The yew tree “U Havlů” was designated a natural monument on 24 June 1998. Sklené thus brings together several distinct themes: architectural history, the village’s historical administrative affiliation, its agricultural character and a designated natural monument.

Cycling Routes Through and From Sklené

There are also two specific options to consider when planning a cycling trip. Cycling Route 4024 passes through Sklené. Cycling Route 4064 connects Sklené with Mariánský obraz. The first route is distinguished by passing through the village, while the second is distinguished by its connection to the named destination. If you plan to use either route, check the current signage and route information before setting off. This will help you choose the connection that best suits your plans, based on which of these two route links you prefer.
