Velká Skrovnice lies in a gentle valley at an altitude of about 415 metres. Traces of local history range from a stone axe hammer dating to around 3000 BC to a chapel, stone crosses and a war memorial. The Centrum Oáza also offers a place to swim. When planning accommodation, this mix can help you decide what matters most to you: local history, landscape or swimming.

The Valley and the Brodec Stream

The altitude of about 415 metres is part of the gentle valley in which the village lies. Another feature of the landscape is the Brodec stream: it rises below the slope near Velká Skrovnice, flows through a pond and continues towards Malé Lhoty. The valley and its elevation are thus accompanied by a specific sequence of slope, pond and stream. If you are more interested in natural features than historical landmarks, you can take this distinction into account when choosing your trip.

From Early Traces to the First Written Record

A stone axe hammer found in Velká Skrovnice dates to around 3000 BC. The origins of present-day Velká Skrovnice are dated to the 13th century; the first written record of Skrovnice dates from 1371. The historical traces therefore go far beyond the dating of the present-day village: the archaeological find, the origins of the village and the written record represent three different historical layers.

The Chapel and Memorials

The Chapel of Saints Cyril and Methodius was built in 1912. A cemetery was established around it in 1934. By house no. 70 stands a statue of Saint Wenceslas, erected in 1870 and most recently restored in 2019. These dates reveal different periods in the village’s history: the construction of the chapel and the establishment of a burial ground on the one hand, and the erection and later restoration of a monument on the other.

The stone crosses each have their own story, too. The cross by house no. 19 was erected in 1885 and gave the “U křížku” bus stop its name. Another stone cross by house no. 8 dates from 1862, was re-erected in 1991 and most recently restored in 2019. Its original erection, re-erection and restoration can be understood as distinct points in time.

The War Memorial and Swimming Facilities

The sandstone war memorial, with a stylised soldier and inscribed stone plaques, commemorates the municipality’s fallen and missing residents. It was renovated in 2024. A new path made of sandstone stepping stones leads to the memorial. In this way, remembrance of the municipality’s residents meets a more recent construction project at the memorial.

Swimming is another option. Centrum Oáza has a filtered fire-water reservoir measuring approximately 25 × 15 metres, where swimming is permitted at your own risk. The approximate dimensions give a tangible sense of the swimming facilities, while the warning that use is at your own risk remains an important condition. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can consider whether local history, the landscape or the swimming facilities suit your travel interests.
