St. James’s Church, a distinctive landmark of Bystřec, has a bell dating from 1585 bearing the coat of arms of the Perštýns. The village can also be described by its location in the valley of the stream of the same name and by a blue-marked hiking trail. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose between local history and hiking as distinct points of interest.

Bystřec in the Stream Valley

Bystřec lies in the foothills of the Orlické Mountains, near Jablonné nad Orlicí. The village is also situated in a deep valley of the stream of the same name, west of Buková hora in the southern part of the Orlické Mountains. This location gives you clear geographical bearings: Bystřec is described both in relation to the stream and by its position at the edge of the mountains.

A blue-marked hiking trail passes through the village. If you are planning a hike, check the local trail markings before setting out, as they may change. This makes the trail a useful, specific point of reference for planning, without assuming a particular walking time or level of difficulty.

St. James’s Church: Building History in Two Dates

The present stone St. James’s Church replaced a wooden church in 1828. It was consecrated on October 17, 1830. The two dates refer to different stages: 1828 marks the replacement of the older church building, while 1830 marks the consecration of the present church. Together, they provide a clear timeline for its building history.

One detail dates back further: the church has a bell from 1585 bearing the coat of arms of the Perštýns. The bell therefore comes from a much earlier period than the present stone building. For travelers interested in cultural history, Bystřec offers more than a single date: at the church, you can see its building history alongside an older feature of its furnishings. Above all, the church remains a distinctive landmark of the village.

From Former Castle Moat to Outdoor Pool

Between 1964 and 1966, the former castle moat in Bystřec was cleaned out. A pool was created there, serving as a natural, circular outdoor swimming pool with an island. The local name “Na hradě” (At the Castle) is still used for this place. The history and present-day name refer to the same spot, while the pool has its own specific use.

If you are planning to stop for a swim, check in advance whether the pool will be open at the time of your visit; access may be seasonal. This lets you distinguish the historical significance of the place from the practical question of swimming during your stay.

Choose Hiking Routes by Distance

At Bystřecké kilometry, hiking routes of 6, 15, 27, 35, 42 and 50 kilometers were offered. This range makes route length a useful point of comparison: you can first consider how far you want to walk on your hiking day. However, distance alone does not determine a particular walking time. The distances may change in later editions, so check the current event information.

The 2022 Bystřecké kilometry program also included a 15-kilometer IVV route called “Okolím obce Bystřec” (Around the Village of Bystřec). Check its current status before using it. This named route is a separate hiking reference from the blue-marked trail through the village; distance is a useful planning factor for both, although the information may not be equally current.

Keep Travel and Event Dates in Mind

There is a bus stop in the center of Bystřec. For specific connections, consult the current timetable. Travel directions for a 2022 event recommended taking the train on railway line No. 024 to Jablonné nad Orlicí. From the station, the route continued on foot along the red-marked trail for about 0.5 kilometers to the site, then along the blue-marked trail for about 3 kilometers toward Bystřec. Since these directions related to a 2022 event, check both the train connection and the trail markings before your trip.

A specific event date is also documented: the traditional Benátská noc took place on Saturday, August 2, 2025, in the outdoor pool area. If you would like to plan your stay around a festival, check the dates for your intended travel year.

Plan a Stay That Suits You

When looking for a holiday apartment, you can start by deciding what you want to focus on during your trip. For local history, the church and former castle moat are the main points of interest; for hiking, the practical considerations are route length and current trail markings. A stay around Benátská noc, on the other hand, depends on finding the right event date.
