On the southern edge of Mostek’s cadastral area, where the municipality extends to the Tichá Orlice, lies the Hemže-Mýtkov Nature Reserve. There are also cultural monuments from different periods: a rare surviving medieval reconciliation cross, a stone cross bearing restoration dates, and traces of a castle. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can plan your stay around your preferred focus: river scenery and cycling, or monuments and local history.

Hemže-Mýtkov: Slopes, Forest and Cut-off Meanders

The nature reserve includes south-facing slopes above the river. Scree forests grow on marl outcrops, and the area is also notable for its diverse forest flora. Molluscs and amphibians live in the nearby cut-off meanders of the Tichá Orlice. For nature enthusiasts, the area is defined by its combination of different habitats: the slopes and forest are part of the reserve, as are the habitats in the cut-off meanders.

Cycle Route and a Waterfall Dependent on Water Levels

Cycle Route 4061 provides access to the nature reserve from Choceň and continues towards Česká Třebová. If you are considering it when planning your trip, check the current route conditions before setting out. A waterfall may appear in the reserve’s gorge when water levels are higher. It is therefore a natural feature whose appearance depends on water levels, rather than a fixed item to include in your itinerary.

Reconciliation Cross, Castle Capital and Stone Cross

The Mostek reconciliation cross is a protected cultural monument and is considered a rare surviving medieval monument associated with a tragic local event. It stands between Mostek and Brandýs nad Orlicí on Road 312, about 250 metres beyond the village in the direction of Brandýs nad Orlicí. Its precise location, protected status and recorded historical significance come together here.

Opposite the former grocery store stands a capital from the castle. Construction of the castle began in 1724; in 1874, farmers from Mostek dismantled the remaining ruins. The two dates mark different phases in the castle’s history: the start of construction and the later demolition of the remaining ruins.

Kříž v Mostku is a stone cross on a four-sided stone plinth. Its reverse records its erection in 1842 and restorations in 1881, 1894, 1923, 1937, 1970 and 2008. The dates thus record both its creation and several later restorations.

Cultural History in Sudličkova Lhota

Sudličkova Lhota also offers historical points of interest; these cultural sites are located there, not in Mostek itself. The Sudličkova Distillery is housed in the rooms of a medieval manor house. The first surviving records of alcohol distillation there date from the 15th century. Check the distillery’s visiting arrangements before you travel.

Sudličkova Lhota is also home to a medieval agricultural estate dating from the 14th century, which included a manor house. The two historical subjects highlight different periods: the estate points to the 14th century, while the surviving records of distillation date from the 15th century. This offers two different perspectives on Lhota’s cultural history.

Choose the Focus of Your Stay

The distinction matters when planning: the monuments are fixed historical sites with specific dates, while the waterfall may appear only when water levels are higher. You should also check the current cycle-route conditions before setting out. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can therefore consider whether nature and cycling or monuments and architectural history should take up more of your stay.
