Cycling Route 1 passes through Starý Dvůr; nature and local history are also distinct perspectives to explore. The points of interest described range from the route of a cycling trail to forests and wildlife, a history book and individual buildings. This can help you assess the place based on the topics that matter for your stay.

Cycling Route and Nature Trail

The Železné hory Microregion’s Cycling Route 1 passes through Starý Dvůr between Ronov nad Doubravou and the Seč–Trhová Kamenice–Hlinsko section. For cyclists, this is a specific point of reference when considering whether to include Starý Dvůr in their route. The sequence of places mentioned helps you locate the village along the route.

The Lichnice–Kaňkovy hory nature trail covers forestry and the flora and fauna of the Železné hory area. Its focus brings together forest use and natural history. The trail ends at a crossroads where the Starodvorská meets the Hedvikovská Gorge. Here, a clearly named endpoint meets a focus on forests and wildlife—an interesting option for travelers who want to explore the region’s landscapes as well as cycle.

Getting Your Bearings in the Landscape

The Hedvikovská Gorge branches off toward Kraskov and Starý Dvůr. Hedvičino údolí, in turn, is the valley of the Zlatý potok, which rises from the Pekelské rybníky ponds. The gorge is described by two directions, while the stream and its source are central to the valley. These distinct geographic features provide more specific points of reference than a general mention of nature: you can consider the gorge, the river valley and the ponds associated with the stream as separate landscape features.

Castle and Local History

Near Starý Dvůr, Lichnice Castle was founded around 1250 and demolished in 1649 by special order of Ferdinand III. Its ruins stand on a rocky hill 480 meters high. The Milada observation tower is located in one of the towers. The castle’s founding and later demolition provide two clearly dated milestones in its history; the hill and tower add specific features of the structure to this timeline.

Starý Dvůr’s local heritage also includes a variety of structures: a cast-iron cross on a sandstone pedestal and a modern bell tower dating from the 20th century. Late Neoclassical house No. 4 was converted from a timber-framed structure into a solid masonry building before 1872. This example documents a specific change in construction, while the cross and bell tower represent other forms of local heritage. Mádlův rybník pond stands on the site of the former estate pond Cihelna; here, a historical change to the place adds to the architectural history.

Published in December 2023, the book “Jak šel čas pod Lichnicí” covers the history of Třemošnice and the settlements of Kubíkovy Duby, Hedvikov, Závratec, Lhůty, Podhradí, Starý Dvůr and Skoranov from the 13th century to 1945. It is available to buy at the Třemošnice library; check availability again before your trip. This broadens the historical perspective beyond individual buildings to include a long period and several named places.
