Zájezdec is the smallest municipality in the Chrudimsko microregion in terms of both population and area. To get your bearings, there are a few clear landmarks: the Jewish cemetery is in the northern part, and the chapel is in the center. Visitors interested in sacred architecture, Jewish heritage and archaeological context will find several distinct local topics here.
Jewish Cemetery: Location and History
The Jewish cemetery in Zájezdec lies in the northern part of the village, between a pond and the road to Přestavlky. This description combines a cardinal direction with two clearly named landmarks to help you place it. The cemetery is thus located as a northern point of interest, while the chapel provides a separate landmark in the center.
The cemetery is believed to have been established in the second half of the 18th century. The grounds contain about 115 tombstones dating from 1789 to 1919. The two time references complement each other but are not equally precise: the date of establishment remains an approximate historical estimate, while the years indicate the dated span of the tombstones. This distinction matters for local Jewish history, since an assumed starting point and the period covered by the existing tombstones answer different questions. There are 130 years between the earliest and latest dates given.
Chapel, Statue and Archaeological Context
The chapel in the center dates from 1892. The statue of Saint John of Nepomuk was restored in 2009 and subsequently placed by the chapel in the village center. A heritage inventory also records that it was moved to a depot. Therefore, before your visit, check whether the statue can currently be seen by the chapel. The year 1892 falls within the period covered by the cemetery tombstones, so the dated references to the chapel and cemetery overlap in time.
The medieval and modern-era village center has also been studied archaeologically: finds have been documented there, or their presence is supported by evidence. This means the local history extends beyond the buildings and tombstones mentioned above to include archaeological traces in the center.
Pond and Playground
The larger Malá voda pond lies north of Zájezdec. It adds a named landscape feature to the description of the village and offers another way to place the destination.
Between 2003 and spring 2005, a fenced children's playground was set up in the southern part of Zájezdec. Its equipment at the time included a spring rocker, a slide, swings, a rope climbing ladder, three benches and a sandbox. The equipment may have changed. If you would like to include the playground in your plans, check in advance whether it is accessible and which items are currently there.
