Visitors choosing Krouna for a stay will find two clearly distinct themes: protected nature and architectural and cultural heritage spanning several centuries. The southern part of the village lies within the Žďárské vrchy Protected Landscape Area. Natural monuments, churches, folk architecture and painted wooden toys give the village a range of different points of interest. When looking for a holiday apartment, it is therefore helpful to consider whether you would like to focus mainly on nature or on architectural and cultural history.

Protected Nature in Krouna

The Bučina–Spálený kopec Natural Monument is located in Krouna, covers 37.72 hectares and was designated in 2010. Its conservation objectives include semi-natural spruce-beech forest communities and the protected bird species Tengmalm’s owl (Aegolius funereus), black woodpecker (Dryocopus martius) and stock dove (Columba oenas). Sightings of these species depend on the season and are not guaranteed.

The U Tučkovy hájenky Natural Monument extends from the area of Svratouch into Krouna. The rare, protected superb pink (Dianthus superbus) also occurs in the cadastral area of Krouna. Thus, the natural attractions range from forest habitats and protected birds to a rare plant. The two protected areas have different geographical references: Bučina–Spálený kopec is located in Krouna, while U Tučkovy hájenky extends from the area of Svratouch into Krouna. Plant sightings, too, are not assured at every time of year.

Churches, Folk Architecture and Craftsmanship

The Catholic Church of Saint Michael the Archangel is a Baroque building dating from the second half of the 18th century. It stands on the site of a Gothic parish church first mentioned in 1350. The year refers to the earlier parish church on this site, not to the Baroque building. This helps place the building history in context without treating the two churches as the same building.

After the 1781 Patent of Toleration, the Protestant congregation in Krouna was founded as the first Reformed congregation in Bohemia. Krouna is also home to a valuable Renaissance baptismal font dating from the 16th century. Together, these testimonies reflect different aspects of religious history: the founding of a congregation and a surviving work of art.

Bukáčkův statek, No. 61, is a well-preserved and significant monument of folk architecture dating from the early 19th century. As a farmstead, it complements the religious buildings with another form of architectural heritage. The traditional production of painted wooden toys is also still associated with Krouna and represents the municipality both in the Czech Republic and abroad. The cultural heritage therefore includes not only historic buildings but also a craft that remains connected with the village.

For planning your trip, this means choosing between different interests: natural monuments and protected species offer a different focus from churches, community history and architectural history. If you would like to include both, you can consider them as different facets of Krouna rather than using a single attraction as the measure of your entire stay.
