Horní Bradlo offers several clear points of interest for a trip: a protected landscape, hiking trails and a layered local history. The Polom Nature Reserve lies alongside the Železné hory Protected Landscape Area; the Chapel of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and the former glassworks introduce cultural and historical themes. Guided tours of the glassworks site and an exhibition of rocking horses and retro toys round out the offer. To plan your visit, you can first decide whether nature and hiking or architecture and history should take centre stage.

Landscape and hiking trails

Horní Bradlo lies in the Železné hory Protected Landscape Area. The Polom Nature Reserve, also known as the Polom primeval forest, is located within the cadastral area of the municipality. This makes both the landscape setting and a specifically named protected area important points of reference for exploring Horní Bradlo’s natural environment.

The timing is important when it comes to the green-marked hiking trail: it used to run through Polom but was rerouted outside the protected area for the safety of hikers. The rerouting applies from May 2023 to 2033. So if you use the green markings to plan your route, follow the rerouted trail rather than the former route through Polom.

The main Via Czechia hiking trail passes through Horní Bradlo. The village has a shelter, a restaurant, a grocery store and a bus connection. These details provide practical guidance for a stay in the village and complement the hiking information with named facilities and a transport link.

The name of the village also has a geological connection: Horní Bradlo derives from an independent rock or rock escarpment, known in geology as a bradlo. This origin adds a linguistic dimension to the protected areas and gives the place name its own link to geology.

Chapel and local history

The subsidiary Chapel of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was built between 1892 and 1894 in the Neo-Gothic style. It contains the Rükl family crypt and is a cultural monument as well as a prominent landmark of Horní Bradlo. Its construction dates, style and crypt bring architectural and family history together in one building.

The windows are another distinctive feature of the chapel: its slender windows and eastern rose window contain coloured stained glass. A rose window is circular, making it clearly different from the elongated windows. The coloured glazing adds a specific design detail to the Neo-Gothic style, while the family crypt provides a focus distinct from the architecture.

The former glassworks in Horní Bradlo are also part of the village’s history. They were named Vilemínina huť in honour of Princess Vilemína Auerspergová. The dedication creates a distinct historical connection: while the chapel is associated with its construction dates and the Rükl family, the glassworks’ name links the village with Princess Vilemína Auerspergová.

Tours and exhibition

Guided tours are offered at the former glassworks site for schools, kindergartens, groups and families. The tours are therefore relevant to several types of group visits, including families and groups in particular.

The Vánoční Království in Horní Bradlo offers another theme: an exhibition of rocking horses and retro toys. It provides a different focus from the chapel’s architecture and the glassworks’ history, adding toys and design to the area’s cultural offerings.

The chapel and the former glassworks reveal the village’s history in different ways: the chapel’s construction dates, Neo-Gothic style and family crypt are central, while the glassworks are linked to a dedication through their historic name. For a nature- and hiking-focused visit, the protected areas and the Via Czechia trail take centre stage instead.
