Střemošická stráň is one of the most significant botanical and entomological sites in Bohemia. In the Chrudim District, it is the only location where the lady’s slipper orchid grows. Together with the medieval traces near Bílý Kůň, marked hiking trails and an old folk custom, it gives Střemošice a varied character: nature, landscape and cultural history each offer a distinct focus for planning a trip.
Protected nature at Střemošická stráň
The Střemošická stráň Natura 2000 site protects dry semi-natural grasslands, scrub habitats and extensively mown lowland and upland meadows on calcareous soil. These different habitat types form the site’s specific natural character. Its botanical and entomological importance adds to the picture; the most striking feature is the lady’s slipper orchid, for which the slope is the only location in the Chrudim District. Those interested in protected landscapes and plants will find a special reason to consider visiting Střemošice.
Medieval traces and the village square in Bílý Kůň
Bílý Kůň is a district of Střemošice. To its north lies Žižkův stůl, a well-preserved medieval fortification with a circular mound and a damp moat. Its preserved features make it possible to identify the structure not only by its period but also by its form. A path to Žižkův stůl branches off about 200 metres beyond the last houses in Bílý Kůň.
The village square in Bílý Kůň also brings together several local cultural heritage features: it is home to a St. Wenceslas chapel with a bell tower, a wayside shrine and another chapel. The fortification north of the district and the buildings on the village square offer different historical reference points that can be distinguished when exploring local history.
Marked hiking trails and cycling routes
Two distinct details are useful when planning marked hikes. The blue hiking route starts in Bílý Kůň and passes through Střemošice, Řepníky, Pustina, Zádolí, Brteč and Vanice before reaching Vysoké Mýto. A red-marked hiking route runs through Bílý Kůň and the Krounka and Novohradka Valleys Nature Park. The blue route description lists a sequence of places and a destination; the red route focuses on its course through the nature park.
In Střemošice, local cycling routes follow lightly trafficked Class III roads and paved paths. Check current route conditions before setting out. From Poklona, the view stretches across Novohradsko, Prosečsko, Skutečsko, Lužsko and the Železné hory Mountains. The viewpoint offers a different way to experience the region from the route descriptions: it draws the eye to several named landscape areas and the mountain range.
Cultural events and practical information
A folk custom with a history spanning more than 120 years is observed annually in Střemošice. It has been included in the list of intangible traditional and folk cultural heritage of the Pardubice Region. For the period 2021–2025, “Velikonoční věneček” was also among the traditional cultural events held regularly in Střemošice. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, check the current event dates.
