Stolany combines a protected church with traces of a Renaissance fortress, two named linden trees and recurring spring traditions. There is also a crossroads used by residents for walking and cycling, and a nature trail accessible on foot from Stolany. You can choose the location based on cultural history, seasonal events and outdoor activities.
Church and fortress: two historical perspectives
The Church of St Nicholas in Stolany is a state-protected cultural monument. Its rare and unusual tower pattern stands out and is associated with churches in Staré Žďánice, Opatovice nad Labem and Všestary. These three place names provide a specific basis for comparison: the architectural appeal lies not only in the church’s protected status, but also in its distinctive tower shape and its links to other churches.
The local history also reaches far back: a parish in Stolany is documented from 1352. Another historical trace is Stolany Fortress, which Václav Ples had converted into a Renaissance residence. Remains of the Renaissance fortress survive in an outbuilding. The church and fortress thus represent different facets of history: religious history and the architectural transformation of a fortress.
Two linden trees with their own stories
The trees tell two clearly distinct stories. Lípa Stolanka is a silver linden, planted on 21 March 2019 at U křížku. Stolanská lípa republiky descends from the rare Klokočovská lípa and was planted on 18 November 2018 at a crossroads beyond the village. While the tree species and planting location of Lípa Stolanka are specified precisely, the story of Stolanská lípa republiky is connected to a named lineage.
Walking, cycling and a nature trail
Residents of Stolany use a crossroads beyond the village for walking and cycling. The Pravěká stezka u Stolan nature trail can be reached on foot from Stolany by heading south along a red-marked tourist route. The two points of interest therefore offer different experiences: the crossroads is mainly used by locals for walking and cycling, while a marked route leads south on foot to the nature trail.
The Lom u Stolan Geopark is located in the vicinity of Stolany. If you would like to consider a geological theme alongside the area’s historical features when choosing where to stay, you can include it as another point of interest. Together with the local routes, it offers a different perspective on the surrounding area from the village’s architectural and arboreal history.
Spring traditions throughout the season
Spring brings several recurring events to Stolany. A Morana procession takes place every spring. Before Easter, there is a gathering for painting Easter eggs and sampling Easter specialties. At the end of April, a witch-burning event is held in the park by the pond; children’s fishing competitions follow at the end of May. The events are spread across several parts of spring rather than being limited to a single holiday.
If a spring tradition is the reason for your trip, plan your travel dates around the season and check the exact event dates in advance. When looking for a holiday apartment, consider what you want to focus on: should seasonal events be the main feature of your trip, or are architecture, local history, linden trees and walking routes more important?
