The mountainous, deeply dissected landscape around Vernířovice extends to Jelení hřbet, at an elevation of 1,367 metres. Between protected natural areas, mineral trails, winter activities and traces of the past, you can tailor your stay to suit different interests. When planning, it is worth distinguishing between the distances and themes of the various attractions.

Mountain scenery and protected habitats

The entire area of Vernířovice lies within the Jeseníky Protected Landscape Area. Most of it also falls within the Jeseníky Bird Protection Area, which protects the habitats of the hazel grouse (Bonasa bonasia) and corncrake (Crex crex). On the eastern edge of the area, the European-designated Praděd protected area is part of the landscape; its characteristic habitats include mountain spruce forests, natural high-altitude open land, rocks and peat bogs. These protected areas have different geographical scopes and priorities.

The Břidličná Nature Reserve protects cryogenic geomorphological features such as rocks, stone streams, block fields and polygonal soils, as well as subalpine and forest habitats with springs. Rare, highly endangered and critically endangered plant and animal species occur there. The Zadní Hutisko Natural Monument also has a geological significance: the abandoned, not fully quarried site is the second-largest Krupník deposit in the Czech Republic.

Educational trails and suitable route lengths

The 4.5-kilometre Švagrov Forest Nature Trail runs nearby. Its twelve stops form part of a route intended for walkers, horse riders and cross-country skiers. Access options may vary by season, so bear this in mind when choosing when to visit.

The Mineralogical Educational Trail can be divided into two circular routes: the 14.6-kilometre Vernířovický route and the 10.7-kilometre Sobotínský route. This gives you a clear difference in route length: Sobotínský is 3.9 kilometres shorter. The trail is marked in both directions. It also includes the “PERMONÍKOVA STEZKA” (GOBLIN TRAIL), an interactive route designed for children.

Winter activities and local orientation

The Brněnka ski area in Vernířovice has a 300-metre ski lift and offers night skiing. Free parking is available there. At the Říčař ski area, parking is located right next to the ski lift. This makes it easy to distinguish the two local ski areas and the parking options specified for each. Check the latest operating information before a winter visit.

There is also a specific point of reference for e-bike tours: the Vernířovice municipal office makes a suitable starting point and offers free e-bike charging. The flood park lies in the Merta area, where it meets the Ztracený potok.

Church history and local traditions

The Church of St Matthew was built in 1776 on the site of a cemetery chapel erected in 1711. It was enlarged in 1837 and remodelled into its present form in 1851. A smaller architectural monument is the brick Boží muka wayside shrine chapel: it has a gabled roof covered with slate and an iron cross dated 1894. Both sites reveal different traces of the village’s architectural history.

Vernířovice also has a heritage as a mining settlement, associated with iron ore extraction, forestry and charcoal production. One historical episode takes place in Sobotín: on Palm Sunday in 1678, the beggar Maryna Schuchová from Vernířovice attempted to take a consecrated Host from the Church of St Lawrence there after receiving Communion.

The Masopust carnival procession also includes tastings of fruit brandies and pork products. The local association usually takes part every year. If this event is important to your trip, check the dates in the programme for the relevant year.
