If you want to combine castle history with a walk in Mírov, bear in mind one important distinction: the castle itself is not open to the public for visits. The castle complex currently serves as a prison; check this visiting restriction again before your trip. The castle was first mentioned in writing in 1266. Its history can therefore be explored without assuming that a visit inside is possible. For planning, the memorial sites, forest educational trail and views of the castle are the main highlights.
Castle, monuments and local history
A memorial to the victims of National Socialism is located in a former prison cemetery. A memorial to political prisoners stands in the park opposite the castle entrance. Their themes and locations distinguish the two memorial sites: one commemorates the victims of National Socialism, the other political prisoners. In Mírov, you can therefore encounter different connections to local history without having to plan a visit to the castle as a public attraction.
The column bearing a statue of Our Lady of Sorrows is also one of the town’s notable cultural monuments. It was declared an immovable cultural monument in 2007. Together with the two memorials, it broadens the focus beyond the castle: Mírov also offers memorial sites and a religious image as points of interest for those interested in cultural history. These individual features can be clearly distinguished rather than grouped together as a single attraction.
Forest educational trail and views of the castle
The educational trail in the forest around the castle is suitable for walks for all age groups. Its information panels cover the municipality, the castle, local legends and the local flora. The route thus combines local knowledge with stories and nature topics. If you are interested in plants, you will find a thematic focus there, just as you will if you are interested in the municipality’s history or local legends. The information along the route is distinct from the view of the castle itself: it explores several topics rather than offering only a viewpoint.
A wooden pavilion on a meadow below the forest serves as a viewpoint overlooking the castle. From there, you can enjoy a view of the castle. The viewpoint therefore has a different focus from the educational trail: the view is the main attraction here, while the panels along the trail provide information about the municipality, the castle, legends and flora. These two descriptions give you different points of reference when deciding whether a walk with information panels or a view of the castle should be the focus of your stay.
Getting to Mírov and planning your trip
Mírov is accessible by car and bus. A newly built cycle path leads into the town, while you can reach it on foot by following the Mírovka River. These options differ by mode of transport and provide a practical basis for planning your journey. If you plan to travel by bus, check the timetable before your trip. The new cycle path is a separate option for arriving by bike; if you come on foot, follow the Mírovka.
As another leisure option, the swimming pool in Mírov has a concrete pool supplied with water from a stream. If you plan to stop for a swim, check visiting arrangements in advance. This lets you take the pool’s description into account without assuming that it is currently open to visitors.
