Tovačov can be explored through a variety of themes: its castle and visual arts, the town’s history and memorial sites, and its lake landscape and cycling routes. This structure can help you plan your stay by choosing a focus, without turning the individual attractions into a fixed itinerary. If you are mainly interested in culture, you will find several clearly distinct historical perspectives; if nature is your priority, you can take the lakes and accessible paths into account. This personal focus is also a useful starting point when choosing a holiday apartment.

Castle, Art and Local History

A guided tour of Tovačov Castle covers the estate’s owners, the castle’s architectural and art-historical development, and notable figures associated with Tovačov. The castle gallery features a permanent exhibition of visual art, including works by academic sculptor Bohumil Teplý. The tour and gallery therefore offer two different perspectives: one places the castle in its historical context, while the other puts works of art at the centre. If you are interested in both, you can treat them as separate focuses when planning, rather than viewing the castle visit solely through its architectural history.

Tovačov Square was laid out in 1475 and is one of the oldest squares in the Czech lands. The memorial sites and crosses of Památky 1866 commemorate events of the Austro-Prussian War and the Battle of Tovačov on 15 July 1866. The distinction is useful when choosing historical themes: the square represents the development of a public space, while the memorials mark a specific wartime event.

The ceremonial chapel at the Jewish cemetery in Tovačov tells another story of architecture. It was built in 1889 to a design by architect M. Fleischer in the Neo-Renaissance style. Its date, designer and style add a clearly defined architectural perspective alongside the history of the square and the commemoration of 1866.

Lakes, Paths and Cycling Routes

The Tovačov Lakes comprise four separate bodies of water: Annínské Lake, Troubecké Lake, Skašovské Lake and Donbas. The area provides a habitat for several specially protected animal species, around 70 bird species and more than 30 fish species. The lake landscape is therefore not only a place for activities on the water, but also a natural area with a wide variety of species.

At Hradecký Pond, accessible paths run along the dams and offer views of the water and extensive reed beds. Two cycling routes have different points of reference: the Bečva Cycle Path runs around the Tovačov Lakes, while the cycling route from Olomouc to Tovačov forms part of the long-distance Moravian Trail No. 4. This lets you decide whether the lake landscape or the Olomouc–Tovačov connection should be the focus of your plans.

Swimming is subject to a clear restriction: it is permitted only in Annín Pond, which locals call the “Tovačov Riviera”. As swimming rules may change, please check them before your visit.
