At the end of a flat promontory built up with the town stands Potštát Castle. Its location connects the building with the town’s layout; its history stretches from a regularly laid-out Gothic fortress to a major reconstruction at the beginning of the 17th century. The area also offers historic churches, a rocky landscape and a variety of themed routes. When choosing how to spend your stay, you can focus on different interests rather than treating all the sights as a single itinerary.

Castle and Local History

The castle originated as a Gothic fortress. It was substantially rebuilt as a castle at the beginning of the 17th century. This sequence gives the complex a clear historical framework: its earlier origins as a fortress were followed by a significant change in its function and appearance. Its location at the end of the built-up promontory is also part of the castle’s character and anchors its history in the town’s layout.

The historic centre of Potštát is bordered in part by the Church of St Bartholomew. Another religious building lies in the district of Lipná: the wooden Church of St John the Baptist is listed as a cultural monument and is considered the last surviving building of its kind in the Oderské vrchy area. It acquired its present appearance in a reconstruction in 1746. Potštát and Lipná thus bring together different aspects of architectural history: the development of the castle, a church in the historic town centre and the distinctive wooden architecture of Lipná.

The exhibition History of the Potštátsko Region opened in April 2014. Its subject is the history of Potštátsko, including its districts and the villages that disappeared within the Libavá Military Training Area. Its historical perspective therefore extends beyond individual buildings to encompass the region and its districts.

Rock Town and Castle Ruins

Potštát Rock Town offers a different way to explore the surroundings. Its rock faces consist of resistant Carboniferous sedimentary rocks, and the rocks are over 20 metres high. The geology and height are two specific features of the landscape that offer a distinct focus for a stay alongside the local history.

From Potštát, you can reach Potštát Rock Town by following the Velička stream. The steep slopes of the rock town are home to the centuries-old ruins of Puchart Castle, which can be visited. The ruins are also known as Pustý zámek. The remains include foundations, sections of walls, a ditch and a rampart; the complex is classified as a double castle. Access in the steep terrain may vary. If you plan a visit, take this local condition into account.

Cycling and Horse-Riding Routes

The routes can also be distinguished by their purpose. The Potštát–Boškov cycling route connects Hranice’s cycling routes with the route towards Středolesí and Uhřínov. The Hipostezka na Potštátsku horse-riding trail passes through Potštát and is 31 kilometres long in total. It offers two circular routes connecting horse farms, rest stops and horse-tethering points. The distance applies to the horse-riding trail; the cycling route is primarily notable for connecting with other cycling routes.

If you plan to use the Hipostezka, check the latest route information and facility conditions beforehand: routes and facilities may change. This keeps the different route options clearly distinguished, without equating the cycling and horse-riding routes. Potštát can thus be explored according to specific interests: castle and church history, the rock town, or a network of routes suited to a particular form of travel.
