Vlčice combines a clearly defined landscape with architectural history that can be traced across the centuries. Its three cadastral areas cover 1,865 hectares: the northeastern part belongs to the gently rolling Vidnava Lowland, while the rest lies in the foothills of the Rychlebské hory. Visitors looking for a destination with nature and culture will find both here as different perspectives on the same place.
Landscape, Park and Wildlife
The castle park reflects a distinct period in the village’s history: František Schaffgotsch laid out the English-style park in 1844–1845. The surviving castle park is smaller than its original area of more than 40 hectares and still contains many interesting old trees. A pond is also partly preserved in front of the castle. Together with the moat, it was part of the defensive system of the former water castle.
Another aspect of the natural environment can be found in Dolní les, in the cadastral area of Vlčice, where there are extensive reed beds. Marsh harriers regularly nest here, as have mute swans in recent years. Reed warblers, reed buntings and grasshopper warblers are found among the reed and cattail beds. Those interested in birdlife can look out for these species and their different associations with the vegetation.
Church, Castle and Local History
Vlčice is one of the oldest villages in the Jeseník area; a document dating from 1248 is cited as evidence. Vlčice Castle was a manor house from the second half of the 16th century and stands on the site of an earlier Gothic water castle. In 1829, it underwent a major rebuilding in the Empire style. The parish Church of St. Bartholomew is an example of Baroque architecture from the first half of the 18th century and was rebuilt in the Baroque style between 1732 and 1742. These dates highlight two distinct building phases without merging them into a single period.
The statue of St. John of Nepomuk also forms part of the village’s historic character; it dates from the second half of the 18th century. On 23 August 2025, the traditional St. Bartholomew’s pilgrimage took place in Vlčice. The following Sunday, a pilgrimage Mass for St. Bartholomew was celebrated in the local church.
Cycling Route and Swimming Pond
The educational trail along cycling route 6044 passes through Bílá Voda, Růženec, Letiště, Javorník, Račí údolí, Uhelná, Vlčice and Hraničky. Vlčice is therefore part of a named sequence of places. A signposted local cycling route also passes through Vlčice; check the signs locally.
In the village district of Dolní Les, Dolnoleský rybník serves as a natural outdoor swimming area. If you plan to spend a day swimming there, check current access and local conditions in advance.
