Church history, an industrial monument and a striking rock formation each give Stará Červená Voda a distinct character. There are also cycling routes, a historic chapel and a spring with partially restored access. For planning, a simple question can help: should your stay focus primarily on architectural history, nature or cycling?

Church and monuments

The Roman Catholic parish Church of the Body of God is a cultural monument; its Gothic core dates back to the 13th century. In 1753, the church gained its Baroque nave. Its furnishings include Baroque and Neoclassical elements, and fragments of original 13th-century frescoes survive in the presbytery. The building thus brings together medieval origins and later layers of design.

A Baroque column of the Holy Trinity, dating from the first half of the 18th century, stands in front of the church. It is protected as a monument together with the church. Another memorial site is Josef Obeth’s monument to the victims of the First World War: it was erected by the cemetery wall in 1929 and reconstructed in 2005.

Kaolin railway tunnel and landscape

A technical monument lies in the Old and New Kaolin Mines within the municipality: the kaolin railway tunnel. It is one of two such tunnels in the Jeseník District. Its very well-preserved portal has pilasters dating from 1921. Alongside the churches and war memorial, the area’s industrial heritage is therefore one of its defining historical themes.

Sedm skal is considered the largest rock formation in Stará Červená Voda. The formation consists of granite blocks transported here by glaciers and forms a rock wall about eight metres high. Another natural feature is the protected large-leaved lime tree in Nová Červená Voda, considered the largest known tree of its kind in the region. The Rychlebské hory-Sokolský hřbet European protected area also extends into the municipal area. The Stará Červená Voda forest complex is home to a regionally significant population of yellow-bellied toads (Bombina variegata). Together, these features offer a glimpse of the area’s geology, protected nature and habitats.

Cycling and navigation

Cycling Route 6046 passes through Stará Červená Voda, is 28 kilometres long and is rated as moderately difficult. Check the current signage before setting out. Several singletrack routes of the Rychlebské Trails run through the municipality’s cadastral area, particularly through Nová Červená Voda; mountain bike trails are also available in the surrounding area. Check the routes of these trails before your trip.

From the upper edge of Nová Červená Voda, you can reach Sedm skal by following the connection to the cycling route towards Černá Voda. Trail conditions can change, so it is a good idea to check the current route before setting out. This lets you plan your cycling using either Route 6046’s stated length and difficulty or the trail routes, without conflating these different details.

Chapel and historic spring

The Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows, built in 1904, stands at the edge of the municipal area near Vidnava. Designed as a double chapel, it serves as a funeral chapel on one side and the Latzel family crypt on the other. Its dual function makes it a distinct destination for anyone interested in architectural and local history.

Pramen Pokroku was established in 1848 under the name Vorwärts Quelle and is a well-preserved historic spring in the cadastral area of Stará Červená Voda. Today, it retains its circular shape and has a square marble plaque bearing its name; access has been partially restored. Check current access conditions before visiting. This way, the distinctive historical details remain part of your planning, along with the practical question of how far access extends.
