Vápenná can be explored through its karst, trails and limestone history. When planning a stay, it helps to choose a focus: the Na Pomezí Caves offer a nature experience, while two different hiking options provide either views or information about the landscape and local life. The shaft lime kiln adds a historical dimension. The specific route details help you assess the options by distance and interest.

Karst and protected nature

Jeskyně Na Pomezí is the largest cave system in crystalline limestone in the Czech Republic. As the national natural monument NPP Jeskyně Na Pomezí, it is protected across an area of 20.60 hectares. The Rychlebské hory – Sokolský hřbet Site of Community Importance also includes the cadastral area of Vápenná.

The Na Pomezí Caves are home to numerous winter bat colonies; eleven species have been recorded there in total. This number of species may change in future surveys. This links the caves’ natural significance not only to their geological features, but also to their importance as a winter habitat.

Hiking trails with different focuses

The Latzelova Trail is a nine-kilometre route from Vápenná to Horní Lipová, with eight stops. It passes through the Rychlebské hory and provides information about karst caves, local life and the processing of rock from the Jeseníky Mountains. Those who want to explore the landscape and local topics together will find a route that brings these themes together.

Another destination is the flooded granite quarry Lom Žulový vrch (Brankopy). Near the summit of Žulový vrch, it forms a pond. A blue-marked hiking trail leads there from Vápenná; the route is about 4.5 kilometres long. From the quarry, the view stretches north across the Žulovská pahorkatina to the church on Boží hora. Vegetation may obstruct the view of these features.

The two routes differ in length, destination and theme: the route to the quarry leads to a pond and viewpoint, while the Latzelova Trail is a nine-kilometre route with eight stops between Vápenná and Horní Lipová. You can choose according to your preferred destination and topic without treating the route details as equivalent. Before setting out, check the course of the blue-marked route and the conditions on the Latzelova Trail.

Lime production and local history

Dating from the mid-19th century, the shaft lime kiln in Vápenná is the last surviving evidence of the area’s strong lime-production tradition. It provides a tangible link between local history and earlier lime production, complementing the nature and hiking themes with a cultural-historical perspective.

Getting there and finding your way

Vápenná lies on the road and railway link from Dolní Lipová via Žulová and onward to Javorník. Its location along this corridor provides a geographical reference for travelling there and continuing along the route. If you plan to travel by public transport, check current train and bus connections before your trip.
