Velké Kunětice brings together a clear local history and a striking transition between the lowland and the edge of the mountains. The Church of Our Lady of the Snows is a landmark; castle buildings from different periods and two 19th-century lime kilns add to the historic character. Two cycling routes pass through or by the village, placing it within different sequences of named places. Architecture, the history of lime production and cycling thus offer distinct points of interest.

Church and Castle History

The Church of Our Lady of the Snows was formerly dedicated to Saint Elizabeth of Hungary. The cemetery surrounding the church is enclosed by a wall with two entrances: the eastern entrance faces the village, while the other is to the north. The location and orientation of the entrances give the site a clear layout.

The castle complex consists of two residential buildings and utility buildings of different ages. The castle’s northern residential building dates back to a medieval foundation; the western residential building is Neoclassical. The complex thus brings together buildings from different periods and architectural styles. The fortress, castle and remains of the park are open to the public by prior arrangement or during events. Arrange your planned visit in advance.

Lime Kilns and Local History

Velké Kunětice was first mentioned in writing in 1284. There were limestone quarries in the village in the late 15th century. After the hammer mills there ceased to operate, even more lime was burned in Velké Kunětice. Lime production is thus another historical point of interest alongside the church and castle buildings.

In the village center, two unique 19th-century lime kilns stand directly beside a green-marked hiking trail. A path leads from the kilns to a partially flooded marble mine. The raw material for the kilns came from this mine. The connection between the kilns, trail and mine makes the link between raw material and lime burning especially tangible; the trail leads to a place with a different character from the buildings in the center.

Landscape and Cycling Routes

The cadastral area of Velké Kunětice covers 981 hectares. In the northern part, along the state border, the land slopes gently down to the lowland along the Nisa. In the south, the northern foothills of the Sokolský hřbet extend into the Rychlebské hory. The cadastral area therefore encompasses two contrasting landscapes: the lowland along the Nisa and the mountain edge to the south.

Marked cycling route 6041 runs from Javorník via Vidnava to Velké Kunětice. The regional cycling route in the Jesenicko-Nysa area passes through Sławniowice, Velké Kunětice, Rokliny, Kaltenštejn, Zelená Hora, Vápenná and Žulová. The two descriptions differ in scope: Route 6041 names Javorník and Vidnava on the way to Velké Kunětice, while the regional route places the village in a sequence of other named places.

When choosing a hotel, you could first consider whether you would prefer to focus your stay on architecture and local history, the lime kilns and mine, or one of the cycling routes. When visiting the fortress, castle and remains of the park, factor in the need to arrange your visit in advance or to visit during an event.
