In the valley of the Opava River, nature and local history meet in Karlovice: both themes are already reflected in the name of the nature trail, while Kosárna and the church offer different points of connection to cultural history. Karlovice has a tradition as a resort with favourable climatic conditions. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to decide in advance what you want to focus on: Would you like to discover Karlovice primarily through a nature trail, protected natural areas or historic buildings?
Landscape and connections to nature
Karlovice’s location in the JesenĂky Protected Landscape Area provides a regional context for its natural attractions. In Karlovice-sever, there is a unique, well-preserved stand of native JesenĂky larches. “Native” means indigenous or local to the area, and here describes the character of the stand. While JesenĂky refers to the protected landscape as a whole, Karlovice-sever draws attention to a specific larch stand. Karlovice’s connection to nature therefore ranges from a large protected area to a precisely identified natural feature.
Nature trail with 13 stops
The “HistoriĂ a pĹ™Ărodou Karlovic” nature trail has 13 stops and branches leading to MoĹ™skĂ© oko and Adamov. Its title brings Karlovice’s history and nature together; unlike the church or Kosárna, the trail encompasses both themes. The number of stops and the branches serve different purposes: the 13 stops describe the trail’s structure, while MoĹ™skĂ© oko and Adamov are two named destinations reached by the branches. When choosing an excursion, this is a concrete difference between a trail organised around a theme and a single historic building.
Kosárna: technical monument and museum
Kosárna is a protected technical monument dating from 1600. The building houses a local museum devoted primarily to forestry; its exhibitions also cover Karlovice and notable people from the municipality. The focus on forestry is thus complemented by local history and people. Since 18 May 2026, Kosárna has been closed until further notice due to construction work. A museum visit therefore cannot currently be planned; bear this restriction in mind if cultural attractions will influence your choice of where to stay.
Baroque church and architectural history
The Church of St. John of Nepomuk (“Kostel sv. Jana Nepomuckého”) is a single-nave Baroque building, constructed between 1777 and 1779 on the site of an older chapel. “Single-nave” describes a building with one main nave and adds a specific architectural classification to the style designation. The terms answer different questions: how is the building laid out, and what architectural style is it assigned to? The years given date the construction of the church; the older chapel points to an earlier religious building on the same site. For architecture enthusiasts, Karlovice brings together the building’s form, style and a clear chronology.
