Valterice offers both a historical and an active way to explore the area: it was first mentioned in writing in 1492, the Zámecká cesta cycling route passes through Valterice, and the Sovinka stream flows through it. At the Koupaliště, facilities include a beach volleyball court and equipment rentals for table tennis and badminton. Local history and outdoor recreation therefore provide distinct ways to enjoy the area. If you plan to visit the Koupaliště, take its seasonal operating conditions into account.
History and cultural context
Valterice was first mentioned in writing in 1492. The document in question deals with the division of the Valdštejn estate; under the agreement, Valterice was assigned to the Štěpanice part of the estate. The mention thus directly links the place name to a historical estate structure.
The religious history can also be described in more detail. Historically, there have always been more Protestants than Catholics in Valterice. Among the local Protestants, the Augsburg Confession was predominant; the Helvetic Confession was represented in smaller numbers. This distinction shows that the Protestant population included people of different confessions. Teaching at the Protestant school continued until 1910. The years 1492 and 1910 mark different historical chapters: the first written mention and the end of teaching at the school.
Horní Branná Castle houses the permanent historical and ethnographic exhibition “Život pod horami” about the municipalities of Horní Branná and Valterice. It offers a further cultural connection to both municipalities, distinct from the focus on Valterice’s local history.
Cycling route and landscape
The “Zámecká cesta” cycling route runs via Martinické rybníky, Horní Branná, Vrchlabí and Vejsplachy, as well as through Valterice, before returning to Jilemnice. The entire route is listed as 30.0 km long with an elevation gain of 550 m. These two figures indicate different aspects of the tour: its total distance and elevation gain. Together, they help put the scale of the route through several places into perspective.
Another distinctive landscape feature is the Sovinka. The stream flows through Horní Branná and Valterice. The two places thus share a named geographical connection, while the cycling route takes in additional stops beyond them.
Koupaliště and outdoor activities
The Koupaliště is on the quiet edge of Valterice, beside a forest along the Sovinec sports and walking trail. This outdoor recreation spot is therefore connected with a specific landscape and trail name. The Koupaliště has a beach volleyball court that was reconstructed in 2016.
Table tennis bats and badminton equipment can also be rented there. Confirm the availability of these rental facilities on site. As facilities can change, it is advisable to check the condition of the beach volleyball court before visiting.
The water in the Koupaliště is clean and comes from mountain streams. Water quality and operating conditions vary seasonally and should be checked before swimming. This lets you take the information about the bathing area into account when planning your visit, without overlooking seasonal conditions.
