The municipality of Chuchelna stretches from the summit of Kozákov to the left bank of the Jizera. This gives you two distinct points of interest for your stay: the summit, with its hiking trails and geological features, and the river landscape near Krkavčí skála. Cultural history adds another dimension; the cycle bus and ski lift operate according to their own seasonal conditions. When looking for an apartment in Chuchelna, it helps to match these highlights to your planned travel dates.

Landscape and Geology

Around 260 million years ago, volcanic activity made Kozákov known for its deposits of agates, jaspers, and amethysts. Chuchelna is an important part of the Český ráj Geopark, which is under the auspices of UNESCO. Krkavčí skála is one of the seven geological sites in the Kozákov microregion. This viewpoint lies on the left bank of the Jizera, about 100 m above the river; from there, you can see the Jizera Canyon and Medenec on the opposite bank. Geological significance and a specific panoramic view come together here in one place.

Hiking Trails and Activities at Kozákov

Ten marked trails lead to the summit of Kozákov, including the Zlatá stezka Českého ráje. The Kozákov educational trail leads to Drábovna through the Měsíční údolí valley and ends at the Radostná spring. You can choose between several trails leading to the summit and an educational trail with a named route and endpoint. The 744 m summit also has three paragliding launch sites on its west, south, and north sides. Hiking and paragliding therefore offer different activity options at the same location.

Views and Cultural History

The public viewing platform of the observation tower on Kozákov is 24 m high; it is reached by climbing 124 steps and offers panoramic views from the top. The observation tower has been open to the public since April 22, 1995. Check current access arrangements before your visit.

The Calvary group in Chuchelna offers a different cultural highlight: this Baroque sandstone work dates from 1734 and is listed as an immovable cultural monument. It depicts Christ on the cross, with the Sorrowful Virgin Mary and Saint John the Evangelist standing to either side.

Seasonal Information and Getting Around

When there is sufficient snow, a 450 m-long ski lift operates on the northern slope of Kozákov. The Chuchelna, Kozákov chata stop is served by the cycle bus with expanded bicycle capacity only during the summer season, approximately from mid-May to mid-September. Check the current timetable before travelling, as schedules may change.

Cycle route 4176 runs through the administrative area of Chuchelna along the route Újezd pod Troskami – Rovensko pod Troskami – Bačov – Semily. It is worth checking the current route before setting out, as routes may change. When choosing your dates, therefore, consider the different seasonal factors: the approximate summer operating period of the cycle bus and the sufficient snowfall needed for the ski lift.
