On the southern edge of Čistá U Horek runs the volcanic ridge of Čistecká Hůra; its summit reaches 587 metres above sea level. In good visibility, views extend across the surrounding foothill valleys and from Zvičina via Kozákov to Ještěd. Mechsteine, locally called “žluťáky,” are also found on Čistecká Roveň. This adds another geological aspect to the ridge.
Walks and Excursions
The Krkonošská vyhlídka educational trail was established in 2012 in the area around Čistá U Horek. It is a destination for excursions and walks, and cyclists from the surrounding area visit it too. The viewpoint on the ridge and the educational trail appeal to different interests: one offers distant views when visibility is good, while the other is a trail used as an excursion destination.
Industrial Heritage and Local History
Taliány offers a different focus. In the lower part of Čistá U Horek, a cascade structure lies above a pond. Italian workers built it in 1897 to protect against a flood wave, following a devastating flood. Its location, construction date and purpose make it a tangible record of local engineering history. The link between the flood and the intended protection explains why Taliány is more than a name for a structure: the installation also had a clearly defined historical function.
The Church of St. Procopius offers a different perspective on architectural history. It originated as a Gothic church and was remodelled in 1819. The church also houses a stone baptismal font from 1611, dating to the late Renaissance. The font is therefore older than the remodelling; the Gothic origins, Renaissance furnishing and remodelling represent different historical periods. Anyone interested in architecture can explore these distinctions in the history of a single church building, rather than treating one construction date as the date of the whole building.
The historic centre of the village is also home to a farmstead at No. 17, dating from 1789. The sandstone monument Boží muka u kostela bears a crucifix and the date 1807. The farmstead and monument add further named local landmarks to the history of the church and engineering: here, a farmstead; there, a sandstone crucifix. Their different dates help distinguish them without combining them into a single building history.
Considering Čistá U Horek as a place to stay
Čistá U Horek lies on the I/16 main road between Nová Paka, Trutnov and Hostinné. This connection to the road provides a point of reference when choosing where to stay. When looking for a hotel, it is worth considering what you want to focus on during your visit: is the landscape and its visibility-dependent views the main draw, are walks and excursions your priority, or are you especially interested in local history? This can help you match the different attractions of the area to your own travel interests.
