When travelling to Syřenov, you can plan your trip around two distinct themes: castles and viewpoints, or cross-country skiing in winter. The village lies on the upper reaches of the Černá River, southeast of Lomnice nad Popelkou. At 643 m, Kumburk is one of the two prominent hills in the area around Syřenov, crowned by the ruins of the castle of the same name. This makes the distinctive landscape and its architectural history, alongside a seasonal cross-country skiing route, different reasons to visit.

Kumburk and Bradlec: Castles with Distinctive Characters

The ruins of Kumburk Castle sit on the summit of the mountain of the same name, where there is an observation platform. From here, you can see the Jičín region, Podkrkonoší, the Krkonoše Mountains and nearby parts of the Bohemian Paradise. The ruins and the viewpoint make up a single theme for a visit: alongside the castle itself, several named regions shape the panorama.

From Syřenov, the castle ruins can be reached by train or bus and then by following a 3 km yellow-marked hiking trail. Bradlec offers a different point of historical and geological comparison: the castle dates from the 13th century and stands on a volcanic basalt hill at an elevation of 557 m. While the summit and its views are the focus at Kumburk, Bradlec is distinguished by the castle’s age and the basalt hill.

A Route with Several Stops

The “Ze Syřenova přes tři kopce” route connects Kumburk, Bradlec, Kyje and Tábor via the Golden Trail in the Bohemian Paradise. It ends in Lomnice nad Popelkou, from where you can return to Syřenov by train.

This multi-destination route is different from going to a single destination such as the ruins of Kumburk Castle: it brings together several named stops and has a set endpoint. You can factor the possible return journey by train into your plans if you want to visit several places. This makes deciding whether you prefer a visit to one castle or a route with several stops a practical consideration.

Cross-Country Skiing and Route Lengths in Winter

In winter, you can join the Lomnická magistrála cross-country skiing route in Syřenov. Its main route follows the Golden Trail in the Bohemian Paradise and offers views of the Krkonoše Mountains, the Jizera Mountains and the Bohemian Paradise. The main circuit is 21 km long; including the side trails, the network covers more than 35 km.

The two distances refer to different routes: 21 km for the main circuit and more than 35 km for the entire network, including the side trails. When planning, you can decide whether to base your outing on the circuit or the larger network. Joining the route in Syřenov is mentioned as a winter option, making cross-country skiing a seasonal reason to travel alongside the castles and viewpoints.

A Local Landmark and Travel Planning

Syřenov is also home to the Kampelík House, which has a commemorative plaque. It adds a specific memorial site in the village to the castles and routes.

These options differ in the number of destinations, return travel options and season. Decide which of these considerations matters to you before searching for hotels.
