Libštát lies in the foothills of the Giant Mountains, on the road between Lomnice nad Popelkou and Jilemnice. The town is home to religious buildings and other historic landmarks; local cycling and hiking circular routes also offer views of the landscape. When planning your visit, you can choose between architectural and religious history, outdoor activities, or a combination of both.

Religious history in specific buildings

The Reformed prayer house, with its bell tower and cemetery, is protected as a historic monument and was declared a cultural monument in 2001. The Catholic Church of St. George has been documented in records since 1361. The two buildings reflect different church traditions in Libštát.

The parsonage of the first Toleration Church was built in 1786 by followers of the Helvetic faith, or Calvinists, as a single-nave prayer hall with a flat ceiling. The second Protestant church in Hoření Konec was built by followers of the Augsburg Confession between 1838 and 1842; a wooden bell tower was added later. These building histories represent different Protestant contexts and should not be conflated into a single place of worship.

The dates also serve different purposes: 1361 marks the first documentary record of the Church of St. George, 1786 the construction of the prayer hall and parsonage, and 1838 to 1842 the construction of the second Protestant church. The former wooden school building dates from 1781; 2001 is the year the Reformed prayer house was declared a cultural monument. This distinguishes construction dates and historical records from the later heritage designation.

Beyond the churches, the Baroque statue of the Virgin Mary in the square and the former wooden school building are among the town’s historic landmarks. The statue is a single monument in the public townscape; the former school adds a building with a different past function to the story of local architecture. Visitors choosing Libštát for its cultural history will find more than just one religious attraction.

Hiking and cycling routes in the foothills of the Giant Mountains

A red-marked hiking trail runs through Libštát toward Jilemnice, the Giant Mountains, and the source of the Elbe. Its description thus names several directions and destinations. Local cycling and hiking circular routes around Libštát, by contrast, offer views of the landscape. These are different ways to explore the area: a marked route with specified destinations, or circular trails where the scenery is part of the appeal.

For cycling, the Pojizeřím cycle route provides another specific link to the town. Its section through Libštát crosses a historic stone bridge over the Oleška. The bridge is therefore part of the described route and connects the cycling route to a historic riverside structure.

The Pojizeřím cycle route follows Cycle Route No. 4171 toward Libštát, takes a detour through the peaceful Oleška Valley via Bělá, and then returns to Libštát on Route No. 4171. For choosing a cycling trip, this is different from the local circular routes: the described itinerary includes both a valley detour and a return. Together with the historic stone bridge, the route offers both a natural and an architectural point of reference.

When planning your visit, you can choose your focus accordingly: the churches, prayer house, and other historic buildings offer insight into cultural history, while the red-marked hiking trail, circular routes, and cycle route provide different perspectives on the landscape. Libštát is therefore suited to travelers who want to explore local architectural history and outdoor trails separately, or include both among the highlights of their stay.
