Five marked hiking trails run through the municipality of Rynoltice. There is also a shared path built for pedestrians and cyclists, as well as bus and train connections with other towns and municipalities. When planning, you can choose between different routes, geological features and a specific architectural landmark. These topics can be explored separately rather than combined into a single fixed tour.
Hiking trails with different routes
The green hiking trail 1 starts at Rynoltice railway station and follows cycle route 25 as far as Jítrava. The blue hiking trail passes through the district of Polesí and goes by the rock formation Havran. The trail descriptions therefore have different focuses: on the green trail, the shared section with the cycle route is the key feature, while the blue trail passes through Polesí alongside a named rock formation. When choosing, you can consider which route or waypoint interests you most.
The “Po hřbetech slonů” hike also starts in Rynoltice, on a road marked CT 25. From Sloní Kameny, a red-marked trail leads to Jítrava; a green-marked hiking trail then runs back to Rynoltice. Several consecutive trail sections are described here. Before setting out, check the signs and access; you should also take current trail conditions into account.
Cycling: a shared path and a planned connection
A shared path for pedestrians and cyclists has been built in Rynoltice in the direction of the cemetery. This is separate from the planned cycle route intended to connect Rynoltice with Jablonné v Podještědí: the section in Rynoltice is its first stage. The connection to Jablonné v Podještědí should therefore be understood as a planned route. It is advisable to check the path conditions before setting out.
Protected landscapes and rock formations
The Velký Vápenný Nature Reserve protects old-growth mountain maple-beech forests and flower-rich beech forests on Devonian limestone. The reserve includes a former quarry and karst features such as underground chambers, swallow holes and a spring. Here, protected forest habitats are described alongside distinctive limestone formations.
Bílé Kameny is a protected natural monument within the Lužické hory Protected Landscape Area. Weathering has shaped the sandstone there into rounded, mushroom-like and almost spherical forms. Several pseudokarst cavities and small caves were formed by weathering and the erosion of coarse-grained sandstone layers. The geological settings differ: Devonian limestone shapes the landscape at Velký Vápenný, while at Bílé Kameny it is the weathering forms in the sandstone.
The history of the Church of St. Barbara
The Church of St. Barbara links Rynoltice to a clear architectural history: a chapel was first built in 1669, then converted into a Baroque church in 1745–1748. This sequence shows the transition from the earlier chapel to the later church, adding a specific historical reference to the hiking and landscape themes.
Getting there and planning your day
Rynoltice has bus and train connections with other towns and municipalities. If you arrive by train, you can also plan to start green hiking trail 1 at the railway station. Check the timetable for your travel date so you can coordinate your arrival and the start of your walk.
