Kunratice combines a distinctive architectural history with opportunities to discover lesser-known sights on foot or by bicycle. There is also the Kunratická JamParáda, with a public tasting, and a natural outdoor swimming pool. When planning your trip, two questions may be especially helpful: Is your focus on historic buildings or on outdoor activities and recreation, and would you like to plan your visit around an event?
Church and chapel: different architectural histories
All Saints’ Church stands on a low hill at the northeastern edge of Kunratice, at the settlement’s highest point; a walled cemetery surrounds it. The church is documented in 1377, when a parish priest was mentioned there. Its original structure was Gothic. It was remodelled in the Baroque style at the end of the 18th century, followed by further alterations in 1879. Its history can therefore be divided into an early mention and two later building phases.
The Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows lies in the fields east of Kunratice, near Tongrund. Its origins date back to the conversion of a gunpowder storehouse built by French troops in 1742: in 1847, it was turned into a chapel. After 1900, Emmaus Benedictines remodelled it in the Beuron style. Its former military use and subsequent redesign give this chapel a different history from All Saints’ Church.
Hiking, cycling and swimming
The green-marked KČT hiking trail from Frýdlant to Arnoltice runs through Kunratice. It provides a specific route through the municipality. You can also discover Kunratice’s lesser-known sights on foot or on cycling trips. You can follow the hiking trail as a designated route, or explore the area independently on foot or by bicycle.
There is also a water reservoir in Kunratice that is used as a natural outdoor swimming pool. If you are planning a swim, it is advisable to check the current visitor information in advance. This gives you a choice of buildings and local history, outdoor activities, and a trip to the water.
Events and memorial sites
Kunratická JamParáda is an annual jam-making competition open to participants from the Czech Republic and abroad. The results are announced at a ceremony on the first Saturday in November, when all competition entries are available for public tasting. This date is a useful guide if you are planning a trip around the competition; check the details for the relevant year.
Kunratická stopa offers a different kind of event: this traditional nature walk is aimed at children and adults and combines the route with entertaining activities. Here, the destination is not the only thing that matters; there are also activities to enjoy along the way.
An annual commemorative event is held at the Tongrund memorial, honouring those who fell not only in this particular war. The memorial stands on the right side of road III/03511 toward Frýdlant, just before the Tongrund pond, also known as Totex. This location connects the memorial with a specific landmark; at the same time, the occasion for remembrance extends beyond a single war.
