Chotyně combines cultural history with a range of activities. When planning your trip, it helps to distinguish between historic sights, cycling and fishing, and to bear in mind the relevant visiting conditions.
Cultural history in Grabštejn
The state-owned Grabštejn Castle and Chateau, dating from the 13th century, are located in the settlement of Grabštejn, which belongs to Chotyně. The Chapel of St. Barbara is a historically and artistically unique space. A separate guided tour of the chapel is offered at Grabštejn. If you are particularly interested in this space, you can plan the tour as a separate focus of your visit.
The Veterinary Museum in Grabštejn displays field veterinary kits from the equipment of the German, Soviet and Czechoslovak armies. The collection spans from the First World War to the 1950s. The museum can only be visited on a guided tour; visiting arrangements may vary by season. Check the seasonal information if you plan to include a museum visit in your itinerary.
The cultural attractions also span different periods: the castle and chateau date from the 13th century, while the field veterinary kits in the museum range from the First World War to the 1950s. This allows you to explore a historic building, a distinctive chapel space and military equipment as separate themes.
You can climb the tower of Grabštejn Castle without a guide during the castle’s usual opening hours; opening hours vary by season. From the tower, there are panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes of the Czech Republic, Germany and Poland. The tower links the historic castle complex with sweeping views of the landscapes of three countries.
The attractions also differ in how they can be visited: a separate guided tour is offered for the chapel, the Veterinary Museum can only be visited on a guided tour, and the tower is accessible without a guide during the castle’s usual opening hours. Museum arrangements may vary by season, and the castle’s opening hours are also seasonal.
Quaiserův kříž stands in the fenced garden of a residential house and is not accessible.
Cycling, fishing and getting there
The Oder–Neisse Cycle Route passes through Chotyně at the bridge over the Lusatian Neisse. This gives the route a direct connection to the town and makes it a different focus from the sights in Grabštejn. Václavice Reservoir lies on the edge of Chotyně and is suitable for fishing. The cycling route and the reservoir offer different activities: cycling along a route through Chotyně or fishing at the reservoir.
Chotyně has train and bus connections to Hrádek nad Nisou and Liberec. Check connections before travelling.
