Reichenberg (Liberec) combines cultural attractions with nature and leisure activities: the range extends from the zoo and botanical garden to art collections, architecture and excursions into the Jizera Mountains. The very diverse offerings show what you can focus on—from animal species from around the world to historic institutions and paths by the water.

Zoo, Exhibitions and Botanical Garden

Liberec Zoo was founded in 1904 and is the oldest zoo in the Czech Republic. It is home to more than 170 animal species from every continent. iQlandia offers a different focus, with ten themed exhibitions, a planetarium and more than 400 exhibits. If you are choosing between watching animals and exploring exhibitions arranged by theme, these are two clearly distinct options.

Liberec Botanical Garden is another landmark attraction: it is the oldest botanical garden in the Czech Republic. Construction began in 1893, and the garden opened to the public in 1895. Its outdoor grounds include a large alpine garden with ponds and small waterfalls. The aquariums feature a coral reef, as well as the fauna and flora of the great lakes of southern Africa and the Amazon Basin. The aquarium pavilions are accessible through a glass tunnel. The garden brings together planted outdoor areas and a variety of aquatic habitats.

Art, Architecture and the City’s History

MUZA – the North Bohemian Museum in Liberec was founded in 1873 as the first arts and crafts museum in the Bohemian lands. The Lázně Liberec Gallery manages a collection of more than 22,000 works of art from the Czech Republic and other European countries. Visitors interested in culture can explore both the history of an early museum institution and an extensive art collection.

During the summer season, guided tours of Liberec Town Hall may include the ceremonial hall and a climb up the tower, which offers views of the surrounding area. Check the current availability of tours before your visit. The Harcov Dam offers a different insight into architectural and engineering history: it was built between 1902 and 1904 as a flood-protection measure and is considered Europe’s first masonry dam. Here, the focus is not on exhibitions or collections, but on the purpose and history of a structure.

By the Water and Around Ještěd

Vesecký rybník, also known as Teichmühle or Tajch, has a public beach. The Vesecké údolí educational trail runs around the same pond. It is about two kilometres long and has seven information panels about natural features and wetlands. This offers two different ways to enjoy the water: spending time at the beach or taking a circular walk with information about nature along the way.

The Ještěd area is a centre for summer and winter sports and is accessible by public transport. Architecture is also part of the picture: the Ještěd hotel building stands 1,012 metres above sea level and was awarded the prestigious Perret Prize. The hotel and Ještěd TV transmitter together form a national cultural monument. Depending on your interests, you can combine a visit to the area with sport or architectural history, without treating them as the same thing.

Liberec is also a starting point for day trips to the Jizera Mountains. In winter, popular ski areas with downhill runs and tens of kilometres of groomed cross-country ski trails are among the destinations mentioned. This expands the choice beyond the city’s attractions: it depends on whether you want to focus on museums and architecture, nature by the water or seasonal activities in the surrounding area.
