There are very different options to choose from for a stay in Křižany: the Church of St. Maximilian, with its Gothic origins and late Baroque furnishings; the rocky landscape of Krkavčí skály; and the Ploučnice cycling route. Architectural history, views and cycling each offer their own appeal.

Church of St. Maximilian: Architectural History and Furnishings

The Church of St. Maximilian dates from 1384 and was originally Gothic. It has a single nave, a rectangular floor plan and a polygonal chancel. A tower was built on the west side in 1684. Inside, an altar, painted panels, a wooden gallery and a rural-style organ are part of the late Baroque furnishings. The architectural description thus distinguishes the floor plan, the form of the church's eastern end and a tower added later; the furnishings add a further stylistic layer to this architectural history. Single-nave means that the church has one nave.

Stará škola and Hiking Trail

Stará škola Křižany offers a different cultural focus: the building was declared a cultural monument in 1996. Cultural events have occasionally been held at the school since 2021; their frequency and programme may change. If you would like to combine your visit with an event, check the specific dates in advance. The school is on the yellow-marked hiking trail between Pruský kříž and Malý Ještěd. The trail marking and the two named points help with orientation; as routes can change, check the local route before setting out.

Krkavčí skály and the Solvay Quarry

The Krkavčí skály sandstone massif features the Vyhlídková rock lookout platform, with views of the Ještědský hřbet. The rocks are also used by climbers. Vyhlídková refers to the specific lookout point, while climbing takes place on the rocks of the massif—two distinct aspects of the same landscape.

Above Křižany, the Solvay Quarry is open to the public. Maintenance work or safety restrictions may affect access, so check the current conditions before your visit. The quarry on the Ještědský hřeben has three levels and was still in operation in the 1920s. In addition to its landscape appeal, it therefore offers a historical connection, clearly distinct in time from access today.

Planning the Ploučnice Cycling Route

The Ploučnice cycle path is signposted as Cycling Route No. 15 and is almost 100 kilometres long. The first stage starts at Křižany railway station. These two details refer to different scales: the total length applies to the cycle path, while the station marks the start of the first stage. This makes it possible to understand the route as a larger cycling trip while also identifying a specific starting point for a stage. Check the numbering and infrastructure before cycling.
