Chrastava brings together different aspects of local history: one museum focuses on the town’s older and more recent history and its surroundings, while other collections showcase firefighting equipment or recount local legends. There are also protected architectural and technical monuments, as well as cycling routes of varying lengths. If you are planning an overnight stay in Chrastava, you can choose where to stay based on whether you mainly want to explore exhibitions and architecture or also set aside time for a ride.

Museums and exhibitions

The Městské muzeum presents the older and more recent history of Chrastava and its surroundings. The museum includes a small gallery whose exhibitions change regularly. One special focus is the Chrastavské sklepení, where the history of Chrastava and local legends are presented in a hand-painted exhibition. If you are interested in local history told through stories, this offers a different experience from a collection of technical objects.

The Muzeum historické hasičské techniky displays hand-operated and motorized fire pumps. The collection also includes a wooden pump from 1778; the museum is considered the second largest of its kind in the Czech Republic. It is located on Bílokostelecká Street in T. G. Masaryk Park. The collection thus brings together a specific historical object and the development of firefighting technology. When planning your visit, you can treat this as a cultural attraction in its own right rather than grouping it with the changing exhibitions at the town museum.

The Führichův dům also combines architectural history and art: the house was built in 1802 and is a state-protected half-timbered monument. The second floor houses a small museum about the life and work of Josef Führich. The Church of St. Lawrence, meanwhile, is a Neo-Gothic building on a low hill above Chrastava, with an original organ inside. If you want to compare architectural styles, you can consider these two different attractions alongside the Art Nouveau metal bridge over the Jeřice, which is a state-protected technical monument.

Technical Heritage and Buildings

The Vodní náhon water channel and the site of the old mill are also part of the technical heritage. Both were designated immovable monuments in 2013. A visitor exhibition was established on the site in 2021, in the former area of an old mill. The site is free to visit; visitors can obtain the key at the information centre by paying a deposit of 100 Kč. As access details may change, it is advisable to check them locally before your visit.

A Baroque sandstone fountain dating from 1707 stands in the centre of the square in Chrastava. A Baroque Marian column, also known as a plague column, dates from 1732 and stands near the square. These two dated structures offer another historical perspective alongside the exhibitions and technical monuments. Together with the church, the Führichův dům and the bridge, they provide a range of architectural styles and periods, without all the attractions sharing the same focus.

Cycling Routes and Nearby Destinations

For an easy bike ride, the “PROJÍŽĎKA po památkách CHRASTAVY” route is just under 8 kilometres long. Another cycling route leads from Chrastava to Kryštofovo Údolí: it is listed as 9 kilometres, or 21 kilometres as a loop returning to Chrastava. These distances can help you choose how much time to set aside; only the route of just under 8 kilometres is specifically described as easy. The longer route follows cycling paths 14, 20 and 21 to the area below the ruins of Hamrštejn Castle.

The third stage of Stezka Českem in the Liberec area also starts at Chrastava railway station. Nearby is Hamrštejn, where the perimeter wall, remains of two towers and the walls of the residential building are still standing. From Machnín Hrad station, the castle ruins can be reached via a 200-metre uphill forest path. These details offer different starting points for planning: an easy bike ride, a longer route or a hiking stage starting in Chrastava.

Nearby, a hand-operated transporter crosses the Lusatian Neisse; it is accessible year-round. Nevertheless, check access details locally before setting out. Also nearby, Výhledy has a bird-watching viewpoint. These destinations complement the town’s museums and monuments with opportunities for wildlife watching and excursions, while remaining distinct from the routes within Chrastava.

Plan Your Stay Around Your Interests

If you are mainly interested in culture and architectural history, there are several clearly distinct themes to choose from: local history and legends, firefighting technology, Josef Führich, church architecture and technical monuments. For a more active itinerary, consider the two cycling routes of different lengths; the Stezka Českem stage starts at the railway station. When looking for a hotel in Chrastava, consider which of these are important to your stay and how much time you would like to set aside for excursions.
